2nd Trimester

Late fall / winter mommies...what are you going to do?

...about a jacket/coat? I wasn't sure if purchasing a maternity coat would be a smart purchase or not since I'm due in December. But it has the potential to be mighty chilly by November/December...

i do have a maternity sweater duster...wonder if that would be enough?

Re: Late fall / winter mommies...what are you going to do?

  • We live in Northern Cali, I'll probably get a heavier jacket.

But you'll want to have some room post-partum, too. So keep that in mind. And doesn't it get COLD in Jersey?

  • I don't think I will buy a coat. I was given a jacket that is more fall type so I will use that and wear sweaters.

  • I'm looking for a snow jacket on clearance, as I'm due in Feb and I know it will be snowy when I'm at my largest. Not looking forward to spending the money on it, but I'm going to get 3 months of use out of it I think, and like hell I'm going to freeze when I'm ready to pop.
  • score 1 for living in Arizona- a sweater / sweatshirt is all I'll need!

  • I bought a nice peacoat style jacket when PG with DD, but I was due in Feb, so I had all winter to wear it. I will use it again this time too. I'm thinking about buying another waterproof jacket/coat because it rains a lot in the fall/winter here in Seattle. Also, we had a crazy winter last year, so the heave jacket will come in handy if we have another one!
  • I will just wear my existing coat unbuttoned & have my belly stick out!
  • I'll buy a coat if I can find one that's inexpensive. If not, I have a jacket that I used when I was this weight a few years ago. It won't zip over my belly, but at least it'll keep the rest of me warm. I'll compensate with extra layers. It doesn't get that cold in oregon, so i'm not too worried.

  • I'm due January and I have been thinking about this for a couple of months already.  I live at 7500 feet, and expect a fair amount of snow.  Since we're planning/hopping to have several kiddos I'm planning on buying a higher quality, fairly heavy and warm winter coat.  The idea of my tummy sticking out, and certainly being cold, has me a bit worried.  Plus I don't want to get a size or two up in a normal coat, or a man's jacket (both have been suggested by people :-/ ), I don't want lots of extra bulk or really long sleeves!

  • I don't plan to buy a coat.  I am hoping for a mild winter... if so I will wear my old coat opened.

If not - I will hold out until I will have no choice but to buy a maternity coat on Ebay. (that or borrow from my mother - who is larger than I).

  • my jacket worked well the last time-i always wore a sweater underneath so didn't have to zip it all the time.   or else i didn't wear one-but had it in the car just in case.  i seriously was so hot during nov-jan last time that i would sit with a window open while it was snowing outside!   so a jacket was optional!!!

This.  I'll probalby button only one button if it gets too chilly.

  • My pre-pg winter coat was quite roomy ( a size bigger than I really wear b/c it was on sale) so I will be good post-baby. But, like you I am due very early december, and being that I live in Cleveland it has usually snowed a few times by then. DH has a winter vest that I will be using, and I will be just layering an extra warm sweater for the few minutes I need to spend outside.
  • I'm up in central Maine and I thought about this last winter when i was getting a new coat. I found a dress peacoat at Target last winter. It's not very thick but the buttons stop around the top of my belly so i should be able to wear it right up to my due date. And of course after. I've also been told winter is a great time to be in your finally trimester because you are always warm. Hopefully this is true for me.
  • I'm choosing not to think about it!  I think I have some stuff that may work, but it doesn't get very cold here...

It makes me feel better that dionnemd is from MN...I'm in MN and due early Dec. but I know the belly won't get smaller anytime soon after I give birth and Jan./Feb. are the coldest months here! Maybe I'll try the heavy maternity sweater under the coat thing and hope it works! I better start looking for a good priced sweater! Smile

  • I don't plan to buy one - coats are too expensive!  I live in Chicago, so it'll be cold, but I don't plan to be outside any longer than from my car to my bldg/house. If more, I can try to borrow one of DH's bulky ones.  I'll just wear my regular one unbuttoned.  If I was due in Feb/Mar it might be a diff story, but I hope to have this baby by mid-December.

  • I live in Michigan...near the lake...I will be getting a coat!

  • I was thinking about that too--we live in Chicago and it's cold!--but we found out 2 weeks ago that we are moving to TX in November so I am thinking I may not need one now.

This!  I have like 12 winter coats in my closet, I refuse to spend more money on a new one.

  • I bought a cute non-mat jacket that won't zip up. But I have a much dressier coat that only has 2 buttons anyways. Either way, by belly will stick out from the coat. It get's cold here, so I don't think I'll be spending any extra time outside.

  • My little brother was a Feb baby (he's taller than me now!) and my mom was telling me that she went to the Thrift store and got a great wool coat that fit her bump and she rolled the sleeves up once or twice and it was not too bad.  I have a too big wool coat in the closet from when I was 50lbs heavier that I hope will work but if not I am off to the thrift store!
  • Just wear it unbuttoned I guess. With all of the maternity clothes I'm buying, I don't want to add another winter coat to the list.

No, we can't have a winter like the last one!!  It was too dang cold :)

I will keep my eye out for bargains, but I'm actually planning to start scouring goodwilll to see about an XL winter coat so I dont' have to spend a fortune on it.

  • I'm not buying a coat that I'll only wear for a few weeks. I have an old coat that was way too big for me that I may be able to wear or I'll wear one of my husband's coats, which will still probably be way too big for me.

Me too. But it doesn't really get "cold" till January anyway. Cold=60 degree high

  • I found a nice maternity peacoat from Old Navy when I was pregnant with DD.  I think it was around $60.  It's not the warmest coat ever, but if I layer it's no problem.  The best part is that it works for casual or dress outfits.

This! And I have also threatened to steal DH's Northface. I hate buying coats. Damn MI winters!

  • never had the need for one first 2 babies. I was so warm as it was, and i just wore a light weight coat unbuttoned and occasionally a long scarf to cover my front, otherwise i was fine.
  • I got a full length puffy coat from Motherhood for $40 with my last preg. I definitely got my money's worth- not only did I wear it while I was preg (DS was born in Feb), but I wore it almost every day last year b/c I used the Bjorn a lot and the preg coat had enough room for me to just zip DS into my jacket with me.
  • I'll cross that bridge when I get there. ;)

  • I will be using one of DH's coats. If I find that won't fit anymore, I might try to hit a thrift store or something. Then I'll donate it back when I'm done with it.

Looks like we are due around the same time, and let me say I am so nervous about having a winter like last year! Due date on Christmas and last year the week before we had 12 inches of snow in our yard! I'm really hoping not to have to drive to the hospital in my DHs lifted pickup...

  • We live in lovely Chicago where it gets cold in September.  I will be using DH's North Face and finding a cute coat for holidays/outing on ebay!
