Breastfeeding

Quite possibly going insane

I don't know WHAT is up with my LO. We finally got some of our latch issues worked out where I can feed her without wriggling in pain. She literally has been on me non-stop for the past two hours. She falls asleep, unlatches. I burp her, carry her to her crib, and 15 minutes later she is wide awake screaming rooting around. I tried giving her the pacifier to see if she just wanted to suck. Nope, she is still hungry. How is this possible? I finally had to have DH  heat up some of the BM in the fridge and give her a bottle. It's amazing that after the bottle she seems satisfied and will stay asleep. We are going to see a LC tomorrow, but do you ladies have any suggestions? I can't tell if she is getting enough while BFing. She sucks and it sounds like she is swallowing, but after about 5 minutes she falls asleep. I REALLY want BFing to work b/c I am beginning to despise pumping, but I also can't sit and nurse he for 2 hours at a time!!

Re: Quite possibly going insane

  • The LC will help a lot!  It could also be a growth spurt.

  • I bet it's her 3 week growth spurt. They want to eat ALL the time bc their bodies will need more milk to grow in the coming weeks. So, they eat frequently to up your supply. Rest assured, when it's over ( a couple days) there is more milk to be had and they go longer between feedings.

Happens again at 6 weeks, if I'm not mistaken.

This.  It is hard, but it goes away.
  • Can you rent a scale to see how much she's getting from nursing?
  • It's clusterfeeding.  It'll probably happen on and off for the first two months because like pps said, your LO is growing.  Read a good book while your LO is eating!

  • Welcome to cluster feeding.  I had about three weeks of evenings where DS fed anywhere from 3 to 5 hours straight with the occassional 10 minutes break.  I just had to accept that once 7:00pm hit, I needed to be comfy on the couch with DH to bring me food and drink and be there to hold DS when I had to go to the bathroom.  It passed and all was well.  You can do it!
  • Ditto to cluster feeding. And yes, you might go insane, but you'll recover, hang in there.
