I was to have my 2nd ultrasound today- anatomy scan. When the tech first started, the baby was in a crouched postion. She jiggled my belly and the baby moved a bit, looked directly at us and yawned. She told me to walk around and drink some water for about 15 mins.
I go back after the time elapsed and another tech took me since my original person had someone. So she rubbed and jiggled and did everything she could, but the baby wouldn't turn over all the way so they could see the chest, heart and even all the limbs.
Then she leaves, calls in an older man. He reviewed the pics she had taken of the brain and profile, spine, etc. But said I'd have to come back. I asked if this was an indication of anything being wrong, and he said no, that they'll just wait till the baby is bigger and hopefully more cooperative. He also said he reviews all the anatomy scans so I needn't worry that he came in.
They gave me a followup for 3 weeks from now. So I'm feeling a little down and slightly concerned...
Ladies, I need some advice and reassuring words. Thanks.
Re: 2nd Ultrasound- Feeling down.
You don't always get the money shot on the first try. My cousin did not see her daughter until she was 22 weeks.
My son just happened to listen to me as I was telling him from the truck to room that I wanted to see him and that he needed to open his legs.
It is a must for them to get pictures of the heart and they need to measure the limbs...that is why they are having you come in again. If they were concerned about something (other than not being able to get the right pictures) they would've told you.
There is really no reason to worry! Just be excited you get another look at your LO!

I'm sorry it didn't go well, but rest assured that it really is completely normal to have to go back if they can't get good enough measurements and it happens frequently!
I don't know if your doctor's office typically schedules 3rd trimester ultrasounds (mine doesn't), but at least you'll get a chance to see your LO moving around again via u/s before he or she makes his big appearance!
A close friend of mine had to go back three times before they found out the baby was a girl. Her baby was born last week and is healthy and beautiful!
My anatomy scan is scheduled for 20 weeks 1 day, and judging by the posts I read, I feel like I'm the only one who has to wait that long LOL. I hear people finding out the sex at 15 weeks, etc. So I understand why you're bummed, but everything will work out!
I don't think having to come back is all that unusual. They need to get those pictures. And here is another chance to find out the gender! That is, if you want to find out the gender.
You should be chuffed that you get to see your LO again, i guess now i've hit my 20 weeks i am all done U/S wise! Luckily even though my LO didn't co-operate the technician managed to prod and poke until s/he rolled over for the checks.
Like everyone else said if they are waiting 3 weeks then there is nothing to worry about, if they dragged you back in the next day THEN i would be worried!
Good luck and enjoy seeing LO yawn (aww too cute) at you again!
My LO was uncooperative during our scan too. She was curled up upside down (see pic in siggy) and they couldn't do spinal measurements or get a great look at the heart so I have to go back. Luckily, they could see her gender.
It never even occurred to me to think anything was wrong. She was just comfy and didn't feel like moving. She moves constantly but isn't a morning person.
I wouldn't worry, it sounds like they just need more measurements of the heart, my tech looked at DD's heart from 7 or 8 angles. I would maybe drink some juice before hand. That way your LO is awake and will move around. GL!
Don't be worried! This happened to us too. They just couldn't get the shots they needed of out little guy's heart. They said they wanted us to come back when he was bigger and hopefully more coorperative. If they had concerns they would tell you.
Just think of it this way- you get a second ultrasound! An extra chance to see your baby!

I had my ultrasounds at 19 weeks but my babe was either wiggling or curled into the fetal position so I had to go back to get more pictures of the heart a few weeks later. Everything looked good and the tech got the shots right away that time. We got another 6 pictures of the little one out of it. Try to just take it for what they say it is. I was really stressed when they called and said they needed more heart pictures but truly, it was just that they didn't get the ones they needed the first time.
By the way, if you are disappointed that you didn't find out the sex, remember that the ultrasound is an anatomy scan and if you are able to find out the sex and want to, that's just a bonus.
