2nd Trimester

2nd Ultrasound- Feeling down.

I was to have my 2nd ultrasound today- anatomy scan.  When the tech first started, the baby was in a crouched postion.  She jiggled my belly and the baby moved a bit, looked directly at us and yawned. She told me to walk around and drink some water for about 15 mins.

I go back after the time elapsed and another tech took me since my original person had someone.  So she rubbed and jiggled and did everything she could, but the baby wouldn't turn over all the way so they could see the chest, heart and even all the limbs.

Then she leaves, calls in an older man.  He reviewed the pics she had taken of the brain and profile, spine, etc.  But said I'd have to come back. I asked if this was an indication of anything being wrong, and he said no, that they'll just wait till the baby is bigger and hopefully more cooperative.  He also said he reviews all the anatomy scans so I needn't worry that he came in.

They gave me a followup for 3 weeks from now.   So I'm feeling a little down and slightly concerned...

Ladies, I need some advice and reassuring words.   Thanks.

  • You don't always get the money shot on the first try. My cousin did not see her daughter until she was 22 weeks.

My son just happened to listen to me as I was telling him from the truck to room that I wanted to see him and that he needed to open his legs.

  • It is a must for them to get pictures of the heart and they need to measure the limbs...that is why they are having you come in again.  If they were concerned about something (other than not being able to get the right pictures) they would've told you.

There is really no reason to worry!  Just be excited you get another look at your LO!

  • Sounds like they couldn't get all the measurements they needed b/c of the way baby was facing.  I've heard of that happening a lot.  I wouldn't worry about it.  Hopefully the baby will cooperate next time!

  • Aww. Maybe baby was bouncing around the night before and tired himself out! They might have just had a busy schedule that day, hence hurrying you out... I'm sure baby is fine. Just take it easy and take care of yourself. Maybe drink some juice before the next scan? I hear that can perk them up :)
  • I'm sorry it didn't go well, but rest assured that it really is completely normal to have to go back if they can't get good enough measurements and it happens frequently!

I don't know if your doctor's office typically schedules 3rd trimester ultrasounds (mine doesn't), but at least you'll get a chance to see your LO moving around again via u/s before he or she makes his big appearance!

  • Awe, how cute that your baby yawned! I don't think you have anything to worry about. You can't really do much about the position the baby was in, and it just sounds like they couldn't get all the measurements they needed because of his/her position. Really, if everything they saw looked fine, I don't think you should be concerned.

  • A close friend of mine had to go back three times before they found out the baby was a girl.  Her baby was born last week and is healthy and beautiful!

My anatomy scan is scheduled for 20 weeks 1 day, and judging by the posts I read, I feel like I'm the only one who has to wait that long LOL.  I hear people finding out the sex at 15 weeks, etc.  So I understand why you're bummed, but everything will work out!

  • I don't think having to come back is all that unusual.  They need to get those pictures.  And here is another chance to find out the gender!  That is, if you want to find out the gender.

  • You should be chuffed that you get to see your LO again, i guess now i've hit my 20 weeks i am all done U/S wise! Luckily even though my LO didn't co-operate the technician managed to prod and poke until s/he rolled over for the checks.

Like everyone else said if they are waiting 3 weeks then there is nothing to worry about, if they dragged you back in the next day THEN i would be worried!

Good luck and enjoy seeing LO yawn (aww too cute) at you again!

  • I had a similar situation and have to wait 10 weeks from the first u/s to have my next u/s. My doctor reassured me that they just want a better look at the heart and things.
  • My LO was uncooperative during our scan too. She was curled up upside down (see pic in siggy) and they couldn't do spinal measurements or get a great look at the heart so I have to go back. Luckily, they could see her gender.

It never even occurred to me to think anything was wrong. She was just comfy and didn't feel like moving. She moves constantly but isn't a morning person.

  • I wouldn't worry, it sounds like they just need more measurements of the heart, my tech looked at DD's heart from 7 or 8 angles. I would maybe drink some juice before hand. That way your LO is awake and will move around. GL!

Yes  This exactly.  Just look forward to the next one and try not to worry.

  • I had a US at 6 wks and again at 22 wks. I need to go in again at 26 wks for another because they were not able to do all the measuring they needed to do. Something about being behind my belly button. Don't worry about it. That is cute that LO yawned. Mine was blowing bubbles :)
  • Don't be worried! This happened to us too. They just couldn't get the shots they needed of out little guy's heart. They said they wanted us to come back when he was bigger and hopefully more coorperative. If they had concerns they would tell you.

Just think of it this way- you get a second ultrasound! An extra chance to see your baby!

  • I feel your pain really!  I still haven't got to even have my big U/S.  I don't know why they made me wait so long but didn't have it set till last week.  Then wouldn't you know I ended up in the hospital and they wouldn't let me go to my appointment.  I was so upset when they wouldn't let me have it I cried and cried.  I am supposed to finally get it Friday but after I worked myself up for last Friday and didn't get to have it; it just isn't as exciting this week.  I don't want to be disappointed again.  I haven't got to see L/O since I was 7 weeks along.  I am about to go crazy.  Sorry guess that wasn't very reassuring.
  • why are you concerend? The baby would not move. No biggie. They just need him/her a little stretched out to look at organs and bones and such. Remember that though diappointing, finding out the sex is secondary to finding out if baby is okay. Relax. sounds like all is fine.
  • they would have said something if something were wrong.  We had to go back three times b/c our lil one was so uncooperative...it was no indication there was something wrong.  It was all fine in the end.  We found out the sex at 16 weeks so we already knew when we went into it what he was.  It was just a pain to have to go back three times!
  • I wouldn't worry.  If they thought something was wrong, you wouldn't be scheduled for an appt 3 weeks from now.  You would be visiting your doctor immediately.  They just need to get the correct pics and measurements, so they are going to try again.  I agree with PP, be happy that you get another US.

  • I had my ultrasounds at 19 weeks but my babe was either wiggling or curled into the fetal position so I had to go back to get more pictures of the heart a few weeks later. Everything looked good and the tech got the shots right away that time. We got another 6 pictures of the little one out of it. Try to just take it for what they say it is. I was really stressed when they called and said they needed more heart pictures but truly, it was just that they didn't get the ones they needed the first time.

By the way, if you are disappointed that you didn't find out the sex, remember that the ultrasound is an anatomy scan and if you are able to find out the sex and want to, that's just a bonus.

  • Thanks ladies... reading your posts took the worry out of it. ?Finding out the sex wasn't my foremost concern. ?It was the fear of the unknown. ?Your words really warmed my heart. ?Thank you soooo much!!!!
