Rhogam?

My doc told me at my 13w exam that because of my blood type that I will have to have Rhogam. I know this is to protect me for future pregnancies, and also my current one if my baby has a positive blood type. Is this something that all pregnant women have to have or is it just specific blood types?

Re: Rhogam?

  • I have O- blood type- and have to have the shot.  You only have to have it if your Rh factor is negative

  • I think it only affects pregnant women with a Rh factor that is negative.  I think it might have to do with your body rejecting the baby if yours is neg and your baby's is pos.  Look up info on google about the rh factor and pregnancy.
  • I have to take the shot also at 28 weeks and shortly after delivery. It is because my Rh factor is negative. I went to Web MD to find out more about Rhogam. It helps your body from rejecting this baby or future babies, unfortunately you have to have it for every pregnancy.
  • I had it at 13 weeks because I was bleeding and will have to have it again at 28 weeks, then delivery.

My doctor explained that since my blood type is O- and my DH's is A+, I need the shot because we do not know yet if the baby will have my - or his +. All pregnant women do not need it, and even if you are - you don't always need it unless you SO is +.

Also, my BIL is a nurse and told me that if you have no bleeding in your first pregnancy, you really do not need it until you deliver your first baby, since only at birth does the mother's and baby's blood cross. However, since there really are no harmful effects from the shot and since I had a lot of early bleeding, I got it and will continue to.

Prepare for a sore tooshi! Mine was sore for a couple of days!

  • Rh+ blood types do not need to have it.
  • I probably have to have it because I am O-, and my FI isn't sure of his blood type (though he is going to get it tested soon!). If there is a risk that your baby is of a + blood type, and his/her blood crosses into yours, you can develope antibodies against your baby, and those antibodies will start to attack the baby (or future babies) and could impact the pregnancy negatively...

If your SO knows his blood type and it is negative ( - ), then inform your doc and you don't have to get it... but it really is not a big deal at all...

     Hope that helps!

  • You only have to get the shot if your blood type is negative AND the father's blood type is positive, since that means it's possible that the baby is then positive as well.  Once we knew that I was A-, the doctor sent DH to get his blood type tested.  He's A+, so I'll have to get the shots.
  • I'm also Rh- and getting one at 28 weeks.  My sister ended up not needing one after the baby was born because the baby was also Rh- (if the baby is Rh+, they have to give you a shot w/in 72 hrs of delivery).
