Hey there ladies. My midwife gave me my ultrasound report today....we had our big ultrasound last week. Everything looked great, except the doctor who read the ultrasound said there may be a small spot on the bowels of the baby and the head was measuring smaller than the leg growth. I guess this can be a marker for downs syndrome... They will do another ultrasound in 3 weeks because I guess at times everything can be just fine. My midwife says they see this in normal babies and only a small percent end up having something acutally wrong...but still scared me to death and worried me.
We had out NT scan and all looked great .....we opted not to do the bloodwork because I am such a worrywart and we didn't want to be stressed out for 6 months.
Has anyone had anything similar happen with good results??? Thanks ladies.
Re: Spot found on baby at ultrasound...has this happened to anyone?
I'm an US tech, and I think I get what you are saying...
I was a little confused when you described it as a "spot", but if the bowel is considered "echogenic" (white on US) it can be what is known as a SOFT MARKER for Down's. I'm assuming that is what the MW was talking about. Your MW is right, almost always this means nothing and baby is fine--especially as your NT scan was good! That is a much more specific indicator. When things are soft markers, it means that it has been sometimes seen in babies with down's but it is usually always nothing. To even be concerning there needs to be at least 2 soft markers present, which it sounds like there wasn't, so I am sure that all will be ok. I'm sure that you are scared, but it sounds like the MW is not too worried so that's good.
As for the head measurement smaller than the leg (femur length)...did she say how far it was lagging behind? In the 2nd trimester, some difference is accepted and expected in measurements and everything is fine. We usually don't get concerned unless there is a greater than 1-2 week measurement discrepency between the measurements. I'm not sure what they measured you at so I can't really comment too much on that.
GL!!
Hope that all goes well with the next US!
