RP: Anyone have a BPP/UA/Culture/CBC??

Before we go into the whole, "Ask your doctor. We're not medical professionals..." I AM asking my doctor at my appt tomorrow and take what it said here with a grain of salt. OK, nonetheless, I am being asked to have a Biophysical Profile sono, urine analysis, vaginal culture, and repeat CBC blood test because my white cell count was high. My question is what are they looking for? They asked me to do this all ASAP.  I was so caught up in remembering all of the tests they said they wanted me to have that I didn't ask over the phone what their overall concern was. OR is this fairly routine?Anyone have any similar experiences?

  • This board does not really get into the whole ask your dr. comment -we all know and understand over here that we are looking for similar experiences or shared advice, not to replace our dr. so you do not have to be worried about that sort of snark over here. :)

What did you have the blood work done for in the first place?  was it just routine or were they concerned about something specific?

I have had several BPP, primarily because I have an SUA but also because of my history of pre-e and IUGR..... I have urine analysis and CBC because they are concerned about pre-e. I have never had a vaginal culture (makes me think maybe it is an fFN? - which would be measuring for a chance of preterm labor w/in 2 weeks?). When they do the CBC for me they are checking my liver platelets and enzyme levels, also out of concern for pre-e.

Sounds like you have a lot  going on and I am not sure I helped much.... maybe someone else can chime in!

    Best of luck.

  • It sounds like they are looking for infection.  An elevated white count can be an indicator of that and any type of infection can lead to an irritable uterus/contractions.  The same was done for me the first time I went in for contractions.  UTI's are notorious for causing contractions.  The repeat CBC is to check and see if the white count is really elevated or if it was a fluke.

I wouldn't worry too much.  Just make sure you stay hydrated.  If they are saying they want it done ASAP you should be getting the results fairly quickly, though cultures will take at least 24 hours to get an initial result.

Keep us updated and if you have any questions feel free to message me!

  • I had CBC most every week of my pregnancy post-19 weeks due to complications. It's routine blood work, and as pp said, it checks also for increased white blood cells (looking for possible infections). Every week, I had to do urine samples -- it also checks for protein/key tones and other stuff in the urine). Vaginal culture - depends, they could just be cautious... I don't know what a biophysical profile is...you can always call and ask if these are routine tests??
