Mattresses

Ok this may be a silly question, but if you buy the crib seperatly, how do you know which mattress to get?  Are they all the same size for cribs?  How many do you buy?  Is it like a bed and you need a base and then the mattress, etc?  Tips please.  Thanks!

If you buy a typical crib, most mattresses will fit it.  "one size fits all" sort of a thing.  Buy just a mattress.

I was told by a co-worker that I should also get a crib pad to go with the mattress. (It goes over the mattress and underneath the sheets).
