Comfort Nursing and Pacifiers

My baby LOVES to comfort nurse, especially around 7-8pm before bedtime...he'll just suck and suck and suck but I can tell he's not "feeding" anymore. It's making my nipples sore and raw and so uncomfortable. If i un-latch him, he'll go bezerk! this usually lasts on and off for about 3-4 hours! MH and I are at our wits end...

We've tried using a pacifier, but he doesn't seem to like it (the green soothie ones). I was told it may be because it's a lot bigger than maybe my nipple. Is there a pacifier that is similar to breast nipples that you would suggest?

Any suggestions to make this easier would be EXTREMELY helpful. I'm so exhuasted! :(

  • My DS didn't like the green soothies either.  We're using the Gerber Nuk pacifiers and he likes them.

THIS ~ plus my LO likes the playtex ones that have the have the handle on them...sorry...can't remember what they're called...

  • DD liked the Mam and the playtex orthodontic ones. Now we are using the Nuby silicone orthodontic ones with the little teething nubs. They look space-age!

    Ditto.

  • We use the Avent ones.  At first we had to hold it in DS's mouth and he would protest.  But after a minute or two he would try sucking on it and settle down.

To this day he'll only take it when he just wants to suck.  If he's hungry, there is no way he'll take that thing and he makes this awful face, too.  :-)

  • We use the Nuk, Avent, and MAM. Just keep trying until you find one he likes. My LO hates the Soothies too.
  • MAMs are the only ones my LO will take.  I tried 4 others and no go.

    GL!

  • My four month old has never taken a pacifier, despite my trying over and over and over with five different brands.  He's still a comfort sucker, but it has gotten a little better.  He's not able to self soothe, and I nurse him to sleep all night long (frequent wakings) and I wish he'd take a paci so that he could suck on it instead of me to go back to sleep!
  • DD will only take MAMs. Everything else she gags on. Fine by me. MAMs are uber cute.
