Hip Dysplasia as a Baby...Vaginal Birth?

I was born with hip dysplasia and wore a brace until I was 6 months old. ?Just wondering if anybody also had this or knows of somebody who has given birth who had it. ?Does it cause complications with vaginal birth?

I'm thinking it wouldn't since my hips are formed properly now, but just curious. ?

I didn't even think about mentioning this to the dr. at my?first?appointment, but?definitely?will next week! Just curious to see if anybody has any experience because I was unable to find any info from "Dr. Google" :)

  • -the best advice I can offer is to ask your doc next week

    Good Luck!

  • My mom had this when she was born and was in a cast for 18 months. She had 4 vaginal deliveries so I don't think it would be an issue. Make sure your OB knows though. Although they do a hip check on every baby, it can be heredity.

  • I had hip dysplasia as a baby and had my DD vaginally.  No problems at all and she was a big baby...even at 38 weeks.

One of the producers of the Pregtastic Podcast had hip dysplasia and her two babies also had it. She talked about it in the show... in this link you can read her bio and then scroll down to the bottom for the podcast where she talks about her daughter's birth.

  • hi! i have a condition called spastic diplegia and it does affect my hips and legs (they didn't form properly because of the muscular problems) and all of my doctors think that i shouldn't have any problems with vaginal birth.

so if i can do it (probably!) you shouldn't have an issue. :)

i would still mention it though, just so they have a heads up

    good luck! and congratulations :)

  • Thanks for the replies! ?I'm glad to hear of so many positive births!!

I will?definitely?tell my doctor about it at my appointment next week :)?

  • I have hip dysplasia, and I didn't have the corrective surgery needed. I told my OB, and she said I should be able to deliver vaginally unless the baby gets too big because my hips are a bit narrow because they are turned inward.
  • I had that too. I ended up having to have a c-section with DS but not because of anything to do with my hips. Just make sure you tell your doctor because it can be hereditary.
