Uneven Ankle Edema

So for the last 10 days the sole of my right foot has been killing me.  I get kind of a burning/tearing feeling when I walk or stretch it.  Now my edema (swelling) is much worse in my right foot/ankle.  Has anyone else dealt with uneven edema along with increased pain?  And is this something worth getting looked at?  Thanks!

Re: Uneven Ankle Edema

  • Not to scare you, but any time you have more swelling in one leg than another you should get checked out ASAP in case it's a blood clot.  They can be dangerous, and not something to watch and wait.

This!!! I had the uneven swelling around 28 weeks in just one ankle/foot and halfway up my right side only. Doctor was concerned about that and sent me to the hospital to get an u/s on my whole right leg from the hip to check for a blood clot. Luckily, everything was fine. The left side caught up shortly after that. I would bring it up to our dr...better safe than sorry!

  • You are seeing your OB weekly, right? Does he/she know about this? I agree with PP that it would be a good thing to address. They can always order a quick test (US of the leg) to rule out any clots, which are a risk in pregnancy.

  • My last appt was 10 days ago and my next is on Friday, then I start my weekly appts.  I am hoping the extra swelling is related to the increased pain/injury, but I think I will call in to see what they think since there is the risk of a clot. Thanks for the advice!

  • I've also had this - swelling of my right foot more so than the left - but, my doc didn't act like it was cause for concern. I saw him last Friday and he checked my feet...just said to increase fluids and rest. My left is usually swollen on a daily basis, just not as much as my right. Sometimes my ankles aren't even swollen - just my feet. It's very bizarre, but I trust that if it's concerning my doc will let me know. Still, it's probably a good idea, like some of the PP said, to let your doc know what's going on...just in case. Better safe than sorry at this stage. GL!

  • My doctor told me it was normal for one side to be more swollen than the other and he said it's usually the right. I asked about it at my last appointment because I was concerned.
