Breast Pump

I'm registering today, so please recommend your best breast pump (if you breast fed). TIA!

Re: Breast Pump

  • I used the advent hand held pump. I stayed at home and did not need a big one. I thin kthe hand held worked just fine for when I needed it. I plan on using it again. Hope this helps.

  • I have a Medela PIS and purchased it because I had the same one for DD.  But lost part of it when we had trouble with our movers a few years ago.  I like it a lot and a lot of others feel that it is a great product.

No matter what you get I would recommend that you definitely get a double electric pump.  Some who plan to EBF think that they can get away with a single hand held.  But the double electrics are so much more convenient (and saves the hand too).

  • Really depends on how you'll be using the pump.  If you're going to be staying at home and only pumping the occasional bottle, you'll probably be fine getting a single hand pump like the Advent Isis.  If you're returning to work, you might want to look into renting a more powerful double pump.

  • The pump you use depends on a few things. Particularly will you be working outside the home or stay at home? Will you be pumping exclusively (sometimes hard to say until you start BFing)?

I keep DS with me all day but I pumped to build a stash and have an evening out a week, or other date nights. So I was fine using the Medela Symphony for regular use. It's an electronic single pump.

I did however end up renting a hospital grade pump for the first month. I needed some extra help to get my supply up in the beginning and then just liked the convenience of a strong double pump when I was still pumping regularly. Once I was set and pumping only when needed the single was fine, though the convenience of a double would have been a nice benefit. DS always nursed on both sides so when I pumped I had to pump both sides. This time around I am still going to rent a hospital pump to start.

So here's my suggestion. If someone wants to buy your pump for you, I'd suggest registering for a Medela double pump. (Quiet, convenient, travels easy if you're bringing it to work). But don't open it. Leave it new in box so that you can return it or sell it easily if that's not going to work for you. (Or just don't put it on your registry period). After the baby is born rent a hospital pump to try out for the first 2-4 weeks then decide what you're going to stick with.

  • Thanks ladies. I do plan on going back to work after my maternity leave, so I'll need something reliable for everyday use.
  • I had the Ameda Purely Yours. It's a double pump that can run off batteries or plug in which I found very convenient for pumping in the car, etc. I stayed home but used it to build a stash.
  • I have the Medela Pump In Style Advance.  It is a double electric pump.  I went back to work at 6 weeks and ended up exclusively pumping for DS for 13 months.  That thing did amazingly and I will be using it again for baby #2.  I would highly recommend this pump.

However...  Do NOT open up the breast pump until after you give birth and know whether or not you are able to produce milk and breast feed.  The breast pumps are not returnable after they have been opened.

  • Medela Pump in Style hands down.  Especially if you are working.  Or you can rent one of those hardcore professional ones.
