Older baby now reverse cycling?

My DS is 10.5 mos old and in the past week or two has started reverse cycling.  He bfs maybe 3-4 times/day (at wake up, at each nap, and before bed) but now bfs every 1-2 hrs at night (up from once or twice in 12hrs of sleep).  He's only waking to bf, actually not quite waking but just crying till he latches on, and does not want a pacifier instead.  I'm thinking this is happening b/c he's just recently started crawling a lot, standing on his own, and taking a few steps on his own, I think he's too active to settle down to nurse during the day so he's making it up at night.  Just wondering if anyone else has hit a phase like this.  I don't mind if it's temporary, I just want to make sure I'm not compromising his sleep by nursing him every time.  As for me, we co-sleep after midnight so it's not really hurting my sleep.

Re: Older baby now reverse cycling?

  • DS started reverse cycling at about 7 or 8 months (I no longer remember), and kept it up for a long time.  We bedshare and some nights it doesn't bother me and other nights I want to cry from exhaustion.  The only reason I continue is because I am away from him while I work and I feel guilty.

  • My DS did this as well but started reverse cycling earlier at 6 months old.  I noticed that he ate more often when he was teething (eased the pain for him), was sick, learning new skills, or didn't get enough calories/liquids in a day.  He's probably dream feeding for the most part if you aren't really waking up either.  I didn't notice an issue with my DS being more tired as a result of more nursing at night.
  • DS started to do this. I made it a point to try and BF him more during the day. I would go into a dark and quiet room to BF so he wasn't as distracted. Once he was on a better sleeping routine I went back to BF on demand.
