We registered for a bouncer that the baby will lay in instead of a swing. I've heard from a lot of my friends who have babies that many of their LOs didn't like the swings and it ended up being a waste of money for them. So unless I find a really inexpensive swing at a garage sale, we won't be getting one!
This is a battle H and I will fight out this weekend when we register. hahaha he is so picky with his tastes and I just want to pick a good one and not spend FOREVER over-analyzing it. lol
Thankfully we chose our stroller and car seat this weekend. And that went smoothly :-).
DD never liked her swing... until I sat her in it yesterday while I was cleaning her room... I think it's funny that it took her almost 9 months to decide she could enjoy it Of course, then the batteries died - figures. LOL
My recommendation is that if you decide to get a swing then try and find one with a plug in instead of one that just runs on batteries. If your LO loves the swing then it will be a life saver!
We picked the fisher price smart stages 3-1 however some of the reviews I am reading now says its not good for newborns. So looking to find another one.

We are going for the vibrating bouncer as all of our friends with kids said the swings are a waste of money.
I really think it depends on the baby. I know of babies that loved their swings, and some that hated them. The same thing with the bouncy chair. A friend is passing along both of hers to me, so I'm not out any money if my baby hates them both!
We had both a travel swing (at Gma's) and a Fisher Price one that swung from side to side and front to back. DS didn't prefer the side to side and more than the regular front to back so I recommend anyone limited on space to go for a travel one! You can fold them up and get them out of the way easier plus they are usually quite a bit cheeper. If you are not limited on space, Like PP said, the ones that plug in are really nice too.

my ds loved his swing. We had a travel swing and also one of the full size swaddle type swings.
We purchased the graco sweetpeace....my nephew has this and it is absolutely wonderful. It's kind of pricey but hopefully well worth it!
