Breastfeeding

Is this normal?

Usually at night my breasts fill up pretty quickly, and when I wake to feed DS I'm very full.  This has been happening since he was born, so I've come to expect it as normal.

However, last night my breasts never became full.  He's going through a growth spurt, so during the day he cluster fed some, but at night he still slept for 3-5 hours stretches.  I think my breasts should have filled as usual, and now I'm slightly concerned.  Does this sound normal?

Re: Is this normal?

  • It's totally normal.  Your supply is beginning to regulate because his feeding pattern is becoming more predictable.  Early on, your body makes lots of milk between feedings to make sure there is enough.  Once the amount that your baby takes becomes somewhat predictable, your body just makes what it expects him to need instead of making lots of extra milk.

It doesn't indicate any problem with your supply, just that your body isn't storing milk between feedings.

  • Again, as PP said, totally normal.  Sometime between 4-6 wks PP I noticed my breasts just became "softer" than they had been.  The only time I really fell full now is the the morning if DS has STTN, which he does off and on.  Your body is just regulating and only producing what the baby needs now.
