How serious is mastistis?

My breasts ache (My right definitely hurts more than the left. The left feels like it just might be full even though I pumped two hours ago.) and I have a temperature of 102.1. Should I go to the ER or can it wait for a call to the doctor tomorrow? I'm new to breastfeeding and just not sure how concerned I should be.

I'm strictly pumping, if that matters.

  • I would maybe call an on-call dr.

  • It may not be mastisis as most engorged breasts will be achey, but you could have some other infection post partum. I would definitely call the on-call doc from your OB clinic.

  • If it is mastitis, you will want the antibiotics fast so you can start feeling better. I don't think you need to go into the ER; most OB offices have doctors on call over the weekend who can just call in the prescription for you into a pharmacy. I did that when I had mastitis. Just described the symptoms over the phone and they called it in for me!

  • You're eleven days post-partum, with a fever of 102.  It could be mastitis, or it could be some other infection and you should not mess around.

You should call your OB and have them call you back.  They're there all night for precisely this kind of thing.

  • Do your breasts have red streaks (not stretch marks)? I got mastitis at one week pp and the on-call doctor called in an antibiotic prescription for me to a 24 hour pharmacy.

I would call the on-call doctor now.

  • Mastitis usually occurs in just one breast and it's serious. There is usually a localized area of engorgement, it will be a tender lump. There may also be red streaks extending away from the area.
