A little background: My doctor's office has only one doctor, not a group practice. There are three medical assistants that do all the weighing, urine tests, BP, and set women up on fetal monitors. One of these three medical assistants is new, and only been there about a month an a half. So far I don't like her very much, because she always wants to compare my pregnancy to the one she had 9 years ago with her daughter.... slightly annoying.
So..... I go to the doctor twice a week to have NST's on the baby due to GD. And typically it is the new M.A. that pulls me from the waiting room and hooks me up to the monitor. This week she makes the comment as she shows me to the exam room "you're still pregnant, gosh it seems like you ladies are never gonna have these babies".
I mean wth, she sees me twice a week, sees my chart, knows I am only 32 weeks along, and she has been there less than 2 months. Does she not realize that a pregnancy is 40 weeks long?
I am probably overreacting due to hormones, but I thought this was seriously insensitive to say to a pregnant lady. The last thing I need to hear is someone telling me how long it seems pregancy lasts.
Ugh... ok vent over.
Re: M.A. at doctor's office
in a small defence to the MA, it could be because you are in there alot making it seem like you are further along then you are (meaning when you are further along you are there more--hope that made since sorry if I didnt). But she really does need to stick to her job and leave her personal life out of it. Its not fair to you to have to hear that.
How she interacts sounds completely unprofessional to me. I would mention it to your OB next time you see him and perhaps he can have a chat with all the ladies about what you CAN say and what you CAN'T say to his patients.
When I worked at a nursing home we had so many meetings about how to interact with patients, what we were allowed to say/do and what we definitely were NOT allowed to say (calling the patients "sweetheart" or "honey" was considered condescending and not allowed, for example).
