3rd Trimester

Panicking- question about insurance

Okay, so it just occured to me that our due date is 2 1/2 weeks away and I think dh and I still only have health insurance for ourselves.  Do we need to have health insurance for the baby before we go to the hospital or does the whole delivery count as coverage for me?  When did you set up health insurance for LO?  I'm worrying because for some reason it never occured to me to take care of this.

Re: Panicking- question about insurance

  • Depends on your insurance.  Our insurance covers the baby for 30 days and they tell us it's best to call them as soon as she's born.  They can't get her any coverage without a social security number, birth date, etc.  You should call about this on Monday but don't stress too much.

  • Ususally it is within 30 days of the babies birth so don't stress, you have time and it will be easy. I had worried about this because bf and I have different insurance but after talking to his HR lady, it isn't a big deal.

  • That's a relief that 2 people said there's a 30 day period where they'll cover him.  I had never heard that, but it makes a lot of sense.  I'll check into that.
  • I would call your carrier and see what is covered in the hospital and find out what you need to do to add your LO. ?I know for me I have MVP...... labor, delivery and 92 hours of nursery care for LO is covered. ?After we leave the hospital LO needs to be insured. ?We are getting a separate?plan for her because DH and my insurance is too expensive! ?Don't panic its not too late!
  • Ditto the PP, you usually have 30 days following a "qualifying event" to change your insurance coverage outside of your open enrollment period.  Birth counts as a qualifying event, as does adoption, marriage and so on.

Don't sweat it now, but don't forget after baby!

  • When I called our insurance, I was told that I don't need to do anything as of now.  I simply need to call when the baby is born and we will proceed from there.
  • Be sure to ask about your deductible.   My deductible would have doubled when LO was born, going from an individual to family deductible, and no one mentioned it to me until I specifically asked the insurance rep about it.
  • Call the insurance company. Mine covers the baby for 60 days after she is born. Then I have to add her

  • Just a PSA to not delay in calling after your LO is born.  It has taken me virtually the entire 30 days to add my DD and before BCBS got their sh*t together the hospital tried to process DD's newborn charges and they were of course denied...so the saga goes on.

  • Just to clarify.  Most insurance gives you 30 days if you plan to add your child to your insurance.  If you chose to individually insure your child you are only covered for the child's 1st 3 days of life.  If you plan to individually insure look into it now and apply for a stop-gap insurance (2 weeks or so) for the time between when the baby is born and you are able to apply with the necessary information.  (Individually insuring a child can be much, much cheaper than adding a dependent onto your insurance.  We individually insured my dd for a year with better insurance and far less money.)
