Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

DS is still not saying anything in context....

Would it be out of the question to request an evaluation or would you wait til the 15 month appt?

He babbles and has his vowel sounds down really well, he also says mama and dada but not in context or in any kind of demanding way.  He is a busy little boy and is unable to sit still except for bottles and meals.  He is constantly on the go.

Could the fact that he does not like to sit and interact for  long periods of time have anything to do with his delay in talking?

  • Have you had a 12 month appt?  did you bring this up then?

I wouldn't worry right now.  It's normal to not be talking.

  • I wouldn't worry just yet. My DS is crazy busy like yours and at about 14 to 15 months he exploded with words. All of a sudden he just picked up so many words and sounds. I would probably wait until the 15 month appointment and just keep talking and singing and playing with your DS using as many words and sounds as you can.
  • If he's babbling and making sounds, I wouldn't worry at all.  Yes, sometimes when they're really focused on motor skills, they talk a little later,  but really, this isn't even late.  He just turned one, didn't he?

They did ask if he was talking at the 12 month appt when I said no the pedi just moved on to the next subject, she didn't really linger or have any advice.

I think at this point I will just wait and see what happens thanks ladies!

Yes I think the reason I am concerned is because he has had a lot of ear infections and had to have tubes put in his ears at 9 months.  Even after that though he did not pass his hearing test.

  • At Lily's 12 month apt. they asked if she says 1-3 words.  That is all that is expected at this point.

Relax.  Most kids do the gross motor thing first and then move onto language.

Okay, wait.  If he is not passing a hearing test, I absolutely would ask for intervention of some sort.  That can cause long-term problems and more-so the longer you wait.

We are back at the ENT next week for a followup, he had another ear infection I am going to ask to have his hearing tested again.  but other than that I am probably going to have to wait til his 15 month appt for any further evaluation.

  • I don't think this is a delay at all. My DS is almost 15 months, and though he says some things now in context, he still only has about 7 words and he didn't really have ANY at 12 months. Our pedi wasn't concerned at all.

Please don't let dr's pass over your concerns. If you want him evaluated now (since he has hearing issues also) push your dr for an evaluation. I hope his test goes well!

  • My son is 15mos old and doesn't say any words but babbles up a storm and has good compression.  He is seeing a SLP for something else though and when I asked about the whole word thing she said they don't normally get worried until 18-24mos.

ETA: My son passed the hearing test during his eval so I'm not sure how that would relate.  If you are really concerned then by all means speak up about it to the pedi. You are your child's advocate.  Trust your gut.
