Sugar and 1st birthday?

Did you limit sugar intake for you LO on their birthday?  If they had not had sugar before, did they get sick from eating sugar?

Trying to decide what to do- make her a little low sugar cake or give her a regular cupcake.

Thanks!

Re: Sugar and 1st birthday?

  • We didn't- I figured one day won't hurt a thing, and she was fine. She actually ate a big lunch about an hour before cake, so she didn't even end up eating that much.

  • DD had little sugar (here and there) before her birthday.  On the day she had a regular smash cake.  She did fine!

  • Heh. I am really not big into giving my kid sugar on a regular basis, but I let her go all out on at her party. She seriously ate almost three slices of cake, and no, she did not get sick. She was just reaaaaaaally messy!
  • Both of my girls had reg. cake on their 1st bday and neither one of them really cared for it so in turn they didn't eat too much.  I really wouldn't worry b/c not much actually makes it into their mouths.
  • I did a practice run with a cupcake a week before, knowing full well that my picky little eater wouldn't eat it. And he didn't. He didn't eat it on his birthday either! I'm sure your LO will be OK with just the one cupcake. More than likely she won't eat the whole thing anyway.

  • DS had never had any sweets until his first b'day. He had a few bites of cake and was fine. We didn't give him any other sweets though...

  • We are giving them regular cake, but low sugar frosting on their cake. We don't give them sugar usually, so I don't think one binge can hurt too much
  • We gave DD a cupcake - really they don't eat that much of it - its more like playing in it.  I wasn't worried about the sugar.
