Would this worry you?

Ok, so my DS is almost 12 months and the only word he says appropriately is "mama." He also seems to know what the word "ball" means and will go over to his if you tell him to. But that's it.

I've asked my doctor about this and he tells me not to worry until 18 months. But I am a paranoid freak when it comes to him and I can't help worrying about it. Would this concern you too?

P.S. The other thing that worries me is that my mom keeps telling me that I didn't say any words at all until 2.5-3. I will seriously flip out if my son does not speak until 3

my daughter only babbles and occasionally says mama.  i'm not worried at all.  she understands a lot, and i think that's what is important at this age.

I would not worry. DS is 18 months and has only recently started to spit out a lot of words.

I wouldn't worry.  My DD is 20 months old and only says about 10 words.  I'm not worried.  If your Doc is worried, then you shouldn't be.

no, don't worry. At 12 months, my DS was really only saying "dada" and "ball" and "dada" was not in context to DH.  In the last month or so, he has picked up 5 or 6 new words.  He will be 18months next week.  Please don't worry, it is WAY too early for that.

I definitely would not worry yet. As aforst said above, DC can surprise you all of a sudden w/a bunch of new words. Just keep talking to DC & identifying objects. GL!

Yes, you're a paranoid freak...   Nothing to worry about at 11 months.  DD had some words by then but didn't really start talking until sometime after she turned 1.  My sis didn't speak a word before she was 2 (in the days before EI).  So with "mama" he's ahead of the curve!
