Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

the unintended consequence of "clean up"

we taught DD to pick up her toys and put them in her bin.  we sing a little song "clean up, clean up, everybody do your share, clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere" she gets ecstatic and claps for herself every time she puts a toy away.  everyone wins.

then she discovered the trash can.  dh just found two puzzle pieces and a shoe in the trash can.  clean up...Tongue Tied

  • Unintended consequences are my favorite part of being a mom.

I sing that song to her everyday, she picks up toys, walks around with them and puts them somewhere else. She is her father's child, indeed.

  • LOL!

I taught DS about trash/litter... well, now he picks up trash on our walks and throws it in the garbage cans that people leave out. Tongue Tied  I mean, I like that he's cleaning up our world and all, but ew!

Oh, and we find his pacifiers in our recycle. lol

  • Dude, you totally stole that song from Barney. Stick out tongue
  • Make sure the toilet seat is down too! :)  When I was a toddler I would take every chance to "clean up" my shoes by putting them in the toilet if the seat was accidentally left up.

  • I Right Hug this thread.  SO CUTE!!

DD does the "take out, take out, throw your books everywhere!!"

  • s/o unintended consequences: To prepare DS for potty training down the road, I let him watch us throw the toilet paper into the toilet and then flush.

Yeah.  In the immortal words of Julia Roberts: "BIG mistake. Big. HUGE!"

lol! i had no idea. MIL ran a daycare so she's always giving us lots of "helpful suggestions" :P  occasionally some of her advice sticks.  and this song was it.

  • Ah, yes, we have the same problem. I let dd help me sort the clothes. now i have to go through them to pick out all the toys that she puts in the hamper when i'm not looking. she also throws stuff in the trash too if she can get to it.

She and Georgia must have secret meetings about this.  The sad part is, Georgia can sing the song...somehow the words don't translate into action.  She just likes to watch us sing the song and clean up, after which she says "Yay!" and applauds.  Yes, Georgia, we are here for your entertainment and amusement.
