Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

TMI? (thinking ahead but...) How exactly do you contain a tummy bug when your LO catches one?

I have read some posts that they let the kid sleep in a bathtub padded with towels? Some keep them in bed with them? I fear dealing with this the first time when he is too little to know what to do..  How did you manage?

  • dd just had her first one but it was just vomiting (alot for about 8 hours)...it happened in the middle of the night and she was really scarred :(  i just made a bed on the floor and layed with her and used a bunch of bath towels when she threw up...i guess 18 months isn't bad for the first time.

  • We just went through that----basically he threw up in his crib like 3x that night.  Alternative would be to sleep on the floor with him--but honestly, cleaning the sheets (and him) was easier plus he sleeps better in the crib.  I did hold him a lot those two nights though.  The diarrhea was the worst--and would leak out of his diaper.  Not much you can do but to listen for the sound and act accordingly.  We did have to clean the carpets once--and luckily another time it was on the kitchen floor--which is linoleum.

It's so hard to watch your LO be sick like that----the clean up was nothing really.

  • DD had a stomach bug on Valentine's day this year. She was only 7 months old. I was giving her her bottle before bed when she started gagging. So I sat her up thinking she was choking on the bottle. She proceeded to throw up all over me & her. I yelled for DH. We got cleaned up & brought her out to the living room with us for a little while. I put a large towel on my lap & everytime she threw up I just held the towel under mouth & let her throw up in that. It wasn't a lot since most of it had come out earlier. That & she was so little. Not much to hold in there.

She slept in my bed that night with me. DH took the couch.

I imagine until she can get to our room on her own I'd do that again if need be. I wouldn't leave her in her crib alone if she was sick w/ a stomach bug.

When she had bronchiolitis at 8 months she slept with me as well. I was too worried about her breathing to leave her alone.

EDT: she was 8 months old.

  • DD had two of these and they were both when she was younger. The first time I had her sleep in her bouncy next to my bed. The second time she was too mobile for the bouncy, so I had her sleep in the pack and play in my room. During the day, I ran her to the kitchen sink to be sick.

She coughs before she throws up so I get a couple seconds to run to her and run her to the bathroom (in our bedroom). We amazingly made it almost every time.

  • When DS had it (maybe around 10 months old? I forget), we sat in the bathroom during the worst of it, when it was coming every few minutes. The rest of the time, I'd put a big towel on my lap, so if he suddenly threw up, that'd catch it. But I also kept a bucket (like my mom always did), which we sometimes managed to get to his mouth in time.  But he & I both went through many clothes changes, as sometimes it just gets everywhere. Ugh. What I would give never to have to deal with a stomach bug again.
