Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Does anyone's 8 month old still take 3 naps?

I know that he's supposed to start transitioning to 1 nap in a few months, but he's still taking 3.  He takes one around 9 am, one around 1, and one around 5.  He's pretty crabby when he's tired, so I'm not sure that I should do anything.

  • My nine month old can take up to 3 naps on some days.  It's not an everyday thing but she has been known to do it.  I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Mine!  From what I've read, it's 9 - 12 months is where they go to 2 naps, and into the 2nd year is when they'll go to 1.  I think it's too soon to expect your DS to go to ONE nap yet.

I do want DS to go to 2 naps.  But we follow his lead and he just doesn't seem there yet.  I can't force him to sleep longer!

  • My lo has basically the same nap schedule as yours. It really just depends on the day. Certain days he'll only nap 2x with one of the naps being longer. Why do you want to get him down to one nap? I usually just let him sleep when he wants, I assume that is when he is tired.

  • Actually I disagree with the above poster, usually between 7-9 months is when they drop their 3rd nap and it goes to 2 naps a day. Then shortly after their first birthday is when it goes down to one nap a day. I still think your LO is still in the window and with napping it all depends on the baby, as long as your LO is happy and healthy then its fine.

We transitioned to 2 naps around 7.5 months when I noticed that she was getting harder to put down (she had the same schedule as your LO) and would only take 30 min naps. As soon as we moved to two- BAM, back to 1.5 hour naps!

  • Thanks everyone.  I don't want him to go down to one nap, but from my experience as a nanny in the past, I know that it's pretty common for the first nap to get progressively smaller leading up to 1 year and then dissappear.  He's showing no signs of giving up the 3rd nap, so I have no idea what to expect.  It's good to know that he isn't alone.
  • Yup one at like 11 one at around 2 and one at 5
