Thermometer Recs

I went to take Ella's temperature this morning, b/c she wasn't her normal, happy self.  Of course, the darned thermometer wasn't working.  Figures that the one time I need it, it isn't working.  So, I am going to buy a new one today.  If you have one you'd recommend, please let me know.

TIA!

Also, I'm hoping she'll be better after her morning nap and won't need to worry about it today, after all.  But, I'd feel better if I could just know she doesn't have a fever.

Re: Thermometer Recs

  • Anything you can use rectally.....we got one of the "hospital type" that you can change the probe to rectal, oral, or axillary. When I worked at East TN Children's Hosp we did rectal on anyone up to age 2, and older if they wouldn't cooperate with an oral. I asked the pedi about this at our meet and greet and he said rectal until at least 1 yr.....don't forget the vaseline or ky!
The Knot won't share my Bump Siggy, so here's the low-down: 4/27/07 - Got engaged! 8/31/08 - Got married (to my best friend)! 12/30/08 - Got Pregnant! 9/3/09 - Welcome to the world, Elias Solomon! 8/16/10 - Got Pregnant, again! 5/14/11 - Welcome to the world, Talia Hadassah! 1/14/12 - Ready or not, here comes #3 (EDD 9/27/12)
  • I use a Vick's digital thermometer (I don't know the specific model), but I really like it.  It wasn't expensive and it works great.

  • Kennestone gave us like 4 of their digital thermometers.  I've never had a problem with any of them- just keep them scattered throughout the house, in the car, diaper bag, etc.  LOL.  But I've always preferred the ear thermometer.  I know some will say they are not accurate, but that's what the pediatrician always uses so I figure if it's good enough for them...  ours is a Thermoscan.

  • The ear ones are ok if you use them right, and the kid is big enough for the model you have. They can also be inaccurate if they have an ear infection....we used to use them in the Hem/Onc clinic b/c it was "non-invasive".

We just got an ear thermometer this month when DD was sick. It was so much easier than trying to take it rectally or even under her armpit and it's super fast only takes 4 seconds.  Most times I take it twice to see if I get a different reading. Granted, DD is 19 months... I don't think I would rely on it for a young baby though b/c I've heard it's not as accurate for babies.

  • We have the Thermoscan ear one too and love it.
  • We have one that we snatched from the hospital when the baby was born. Its worked fine so far, but she's never had a fever. My pedi uses the kind that they just scan the forehead.
