Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Not to beat a dead horse but...

...I have an honest question.  Why do people get so riled up about how much people pay for their kids school?  I sure as hell can't afford any tuition for my kid but if someone else can then good for them!

Whether she was bragging or not is another story but people get so riled up about here to the point that it's funny.  First NYC now Euro....it's almost like a witch hunt.

That said, I still think the hiring post deserved the flames.

Re: Not to beat a dead horse but...

  • for me it would depend on the school/product/etc in question. my ILs pay a fortune for grade school in stl, and i don't think it's worth it at all. the student teacher ratio is poor, they don't offer any arts, etc. i always want to roll my eyes at them, b/c they're sending them simply for the "prestige" factor, and not b/c it is actually a good school.

i think when people's posts come off as bragging then people get riled up, and rightly so. why do we ever need to mention dollar amounts on here? i think it's less of a witch hunt in some cases. if i can tell you details about the amount of money you spend on numerous personal items then either you're bragging or you're an idiot, either one i'm not interested in tolerating.

  • I don't get riled, but I do think people who think paying that kind of money for preschool is "normal" or "necessary" aren't living in the same world I am.

This too. We all come from different backgrounds. In some regions of the country, it's almost a requirement to pay for your child's education. It is what people do.  In my region though?? That is not the norm.

Definitely but is automatically wrong because they live different lives?

  • I tend to like Euro, and didn't see the school tuition post, but with that said, sometimes people tell you those things to let you know just how much money they have, not because you really need to know that information or that it is useful or informative in any way.

I know whenever I talk about it, it is definitely in the form of a complaint, and how that is that much LESS money we have to spend.  I do fear, that next year, we will officially spend more in daycare than one of us brings home in salary--which is bad.  I think perhaps NYC may be targeted because of other less innocuous posts she's made about her wealth and status--which I also have not seen, so I'm only guessing.  But living in NYC I can tell you that people do like to let you know when they have money.

  • I agree with Blondie and Amrice.?
The majority of us on here aren't richy-rich, and can't afford the finer things in life, so it does come off as bragging sometimes. That being said--- I would never pay $45,000 for preschool. That to me is absurd no matter how much money I make.

I didn't say that, but I do think people feel that way.  I will say, I find it unnecessary, but this is coming from someone who grew up poor and went to a top 40 college on full scholarship so I *know* you don't need to go to the most elite preschool, elementary, etc to get ahead in life.

  • when is the last time you saw a 4th grader pay $45,000 for their tuition.  It was her parent's choice, not her's.  Get over it.

    Yes

  • When is it ever JUST about paying a ton for early education?  Usually its wrapped up with 600.00 drapes and a private plane.

i have to disagree & agree at the same time. i feel like there is a percentage of new yorkers who do this.... who i always regarded as pathetic and obnoxious. as a whole though i think people were better off financially in nyc (you almost have to be to live in manhattan) - aside from the struggling artists! - and people seemed to not be impressed with themselves. everyone was in the same boat of having a decent amount of money and i rarely heard people brag, even people who seriously could have. so anyone who did want to show off their wealth seemed tres desperate to me.

  • She didn't even say how much the school cost. A Nestie looked the school up and posted it here.

I don't have any issues with people paying for tuition, if that is their choice. Living in Chicago has shown me that a lot of people pay for preschool. We personally will be moving out of here before Lili has to go to preschool because I don't want to pay for a preschool, but I don't want to send her to public school here. There's no way we could afford to pay for preschool regardless.

I also just hate the city in general, but that's another story entirely.

  • FWIW, Euro isn't being slammed because of the private school she attended - she didn't shell out the cash. I think combining the Euro thing in this discussion is incorrect. She is being slammed because of the bullsh*t she posted yesterday. I posted about the school she attended because it is called ETHICAL something or the other and it is clear that she has her ethics are questionable, at best.

The NYC212 thing was a bit much, IMO. I think it's interesting to see how the other half lives.

  • I don't give two hoots if someone pays 20000-100000 k a year on school. And I can't figure out why THAT alone makes Euro crazy. I think in general she's just not "in touch" with reality. But meh. Has nothing to do with preschool costs.

I do laugh at people who take their toddlers to interviews. That's just crazy. I don't care if its "just what you do in NYC'' if you don't get the absurdity of that I just have to laugh at you.

  • Toosdai, I just just Euro as a recent example but she and NYC are not the only ones.

As I said in my OP the hiring post DEFINITELY desreved all the flaming it got, no contest there.

    Wait...who takes toddlers to interviews?

  • 40k for preschool?  I wish she'd adopt me.
  • Gotta defend Euro...and that feels weird right now.

She never mentioned how much her school cost. She talked about her school, and I looked it up. And then I passed out dead when I realized her parents must have spent more on pre-school than my whole education cost, and I went to private Catholic elementary school and spent six years on my BA.

She wasn't talking about it in a context of "look at where I went." It wasn't even her thread. Someone had asked about NY private schools and she told them where she went.

  • Oh I agree that Euro never AW'ed her school or how much it cost - I was just answering June's question :)

Lanie you obviously want Jo to attend McDonalds University.  The interviews are the key to their futures!!!!!!!!!

  • i missed the OP, so i will honestly say i'm relieved that she didn't mention the amount. i still think it's absurd.... but i'm glad that she wasn't throwing it out there. in this case i don't think she did anything wrong, but whoever looked up the amount is seriously lame imo.

Yeah, this is why I don't get June's post. This had nothing to do with yesterday's flaming. No one is belittling the girl for a preschool education that cost thousands. Who cares? People saying "that is just crazy'' does not = people saying Euro is.

I say Euro was, yet again, out of touch yesterday when she posted about the ethics of work and maternity leave.

Yes.  Paying too much for preschool (or attending an expensive preschool) does not = BSC.  Not hiring child-bearing women because they *might* reproduce, does.

  • $45k is more than I make in an entire year.  It's more than most annual COLLEGE tuitions.

I think a reality check is in order ... or at the very least, maybe a filter ...considering that 99% of the people that frequent this board can't and won't ever be able to afford this type of luxury for their child/ren.

  • what she was talking about yesterday maybe wrong in the US but it isn't wrong here.  I think Euro knows it is wrong because of the US values instilled in her but working under Dutch laws/customs/whatever it's acutally fine.  That's how they deal with things here.  I had an employer tell me that he doesn't like to hire people with children.  It's norm.

It's a fine line in this culture....your employees expect to work a 36 hour work week but your bosses expect the work of someone who is there for 45-50.  It's hard to explain but it's definitely a totally different culture here.

It was in the context of a separate thread about whether someone should continue to pay for private school for their stepson.

And the school sounded fabulous, I looked it up and they were very open about their Harvard-like pricing. I didn't look up the school to find out how much it cost. I looked it up because it sounded like an interesting school and I wanted to see what all it offered.
