Success after IF

How did you cut out bottles/transition to sippy?

DS eats 3 meals and drinks 4 bottles a day still.  Im starting to give him regular milk in the bottle now, but I know I need to cut atleast one of those bottles out.  I also really want him to get used to drinking out of a sippy and maybe just giving him a little milk or water throughout the day in a sippy and no bottle at all.  Im just wondering when I shoudl stop the bottle all together....thx

Also, how much milk should he actually be getting at this age?  I think around 18 ounces right?

Re: How did you cut out bottles/transition to sippy?

  • I offered Reed his morning milk in his sippy instead of his bottle the week he turned one.  (He had formula at suppertime only until that can was gone.)  He always refused the sippy until I offered it in the morning instead of in the middle of the day.  Then I just figured, okay you drank out of it this morning, you can do it the rest of the day too....and he did!

Reed gets 3-4 sippies of milk a day.  So 18-24 ounces I guess.  He doesn't always drink the entire cup.

  • We just cut out the two middle bottles when DS turned 1 and offered milk in a sippy. He wouldnt take it at first, so we continued to offer milk in a bottle in the morning and before bed. Then after about 3 weeks he started to take the milk out of the sippy so we cut out the morning bottle and offered a sippy instead. Then when he was about 15 months we just cut out the bed time bottle and offered as sippy instead. Now we offer watered down juice and milk in the sippy. He gets milk about 3 times a day and watered down juice 1-2 times a day.
  • We had a hard time with the switch.  DS gave up the bedtime bottle long before his others.  He just decided one night he did not want it, so I consider myself luck.  Milk from a sippy was a different story.  We only made the transition (finally) about 3 weeks ago.  I just got him up one morning and gave him his morning "bottle" in a sippy.  He took it and drank it all.  So I gave his lunch milk in a sippy and he took it.  He had been a champ at juice from the sippy for a while but up until that point just would not touch it if it had milk in it.  Good luck.  It will happen.  Keep offering
  • DD didn't like sippy cups, but fell in love with a tippy cup and had no issues making the transition to the tippy cup.
