NBR need a little help..

Hope you girls don't mind me asking this even though it has nothing to do with our board.....I recently agreed to watch an 8 yr old boy M-F until school starts after labor day. I'm on day #3 and have realized that he does not want to do anything. His mom told me that he really likes reading and drawing, but that hasn't been a big hit.He doesn't want to play outside, color, draw, play games, etc. Something about him is a little different, which is fine, but I'm dying here. So any ideas or anything you can think of would be greatly appreciated. I already feel like a bad person, so please don't flame me:)

p.s. she asked for only 1 hour of t.v. per day (fine) but that is all he wants to do....he uses that hour on price is right!! lol

Re: NBR need a little help..

  • Has he given you any ideas on what he would like to do?  Could you play pictionary (that might sound lame but I used to love it and thought he might since he likes to draw).  Could he do his homework with you?

  • Do you have a local park/playground close by - maybe he would be interested in playing outside if there were other kids to interact with?
  • From watching my nieces and nephews (10, 8, 8, 6 and 2) - give him choices: "We can either go outside and play OR we can color until lunch, which would you like to do?"  "Would you like to help me make lunch, then play Legos?"  My nephew has ADHD and I learned that it was the only way to get him to make any sort of decision/do anything other than sit and play video games.  If it were up to him, he'd play his Gameboy all. day. long.  Giving him set choices (you can do A or B) allows him to focus on one thing at a time, instead of me asking, "What would you like to do today?" and having to push for an answer (cause I know what that answer would be ... play his Gameboy).
