I need a new hobby and I want to learn to sew. I know the basics thanks to a toy machine my granny taught me to use as a kid, but I have a lot to learn. My birthday is coming up and I'm thinking of buying myself a sewing machine. Anyone have any advice/reviews/etc?

Re: Does anyone have a sewing machine?
Yes. I got mine on Overstock. Mine looks almost exactly like this one, except it isn't a Project Runway edition. I didn't want to spend too much on it in case I hated it, but I also didn't want to get a super cheap one that I would hate (which would probably make me hate sewing).
I pretty much suck at sewing, but it has already more than payed for itself with the pants and jeans I've hemmed instead of going to the tailor. I've done other stuff too, but I have to keep it pretty simple. And go very slowly because I am just totally incapable of making straight lines.
Even though I'm not the best at it, I'm already drooling over a nicer machine.

I got one for my birthday this past year and its been really fun. I've only done 3 1/2 projects so far. A lady from my church taught a small group of us how to make a quilt in a day (crib sized) and I've made 2 hooter hiders and am working on a small quilt (like the one I already made) for DD to use for her dollies since I had left over fabric.
The machine I have is a Brother CE5000 that was refurbished but is like brand new and comes with a waranty.

This is the one I have and its been very simple to use, has tons of different types of stiches you can do and the lady that DH bought it from said it is a great beginner machine that can pretty much sew anything a normal average person would do. It also came with a ton of feet to do different things like button holes and some of the programed stiches.
For the price and my lack of experience, seems like a simple to use and good quality machine.
