Success after IF

Anyones LO on reglan for reflux?

Jacob's crying at the bottle has returned after a 1 month hiatus.  We started premixing his formula for the day and that seemed to work for about a month.  But in the past week, with no changes whatsoever to his formula, he's started getting fussy again.

When we met with our 2nd pedi GI, she suggested that if he regressed that we should consider reglan.  I've read about how it speeds up the stomach emptying, but also about some potential side effects.

So, I'm wondering if anyone else's LO has been on reglan?  And what you thought?  I'm not sure I'm ready to take that step.  I have a call into the GI and am waiting on a call back.

Ugh...I HATE THIS!

  • oh sweetie, that sucks!!
I don't know because Jasper was never on reglan, but have you checked the forums at infantrefluxdisease.org/forums? Those parents know it ALL about reflux..

I hope you find some answers..

  • We came very close to starting DS on reglan.  Even got the prescription filled.  Then, all of the sudden, DS started feeding better so we held off.  I don't know if that was a good decision or not, honestly.  He's had delayed gastric emptying for months  (3 hours after a feeding he still spits up milk) so the reglan would have helped that.  However, the pedi prescribed it for DS primarily because he wasn't gaining weight.  With the better feeding, DS's weight started gaining again.

I was also scared of the side effects.  I remember putting up a post quite a while back on the preemie board about it.  There were plenty of responses from people who said Reglan worked wonders and had no side effects.  Still, I know there are plenty of reports out there that are negative towards Reglan.

The best advice I can give is that don't be afraid to try it if it's clearly needed.  It might help alot.  Just be aware of your child and look for any changes in behavior.

You might wanna put up a post on the preemie board and see if you get any replies.  Also, check out infantrefluxdisease.com .  There are alot of message boards that could help.

  • DD was on Reglan (as well as Prevacid) and we just took her off. She started it at about 3 months old and did fine w/ it. Up until about a month ago, that is. That is when she started getting seizure-like symptoms - which is a side effect of the drug. I was freaked out. We took her to a Pediatric Neurologist and everything. She told us we could continue w/ the Reglan but DH and I decided to stop it. I just hated the constant worrying and wondering if a certain movement was another seizure-symptom.

We actually haven't been back to the GI Dr. since then ... b/c she's actually gotten a lot better w/ her reflux. Still has it, but much better. Anyways, I remember him saying that there was another medication that she could use if she happened to not do so well on the Reglan. Maybe you could talk to your Dr. and see what the Pros and Cons are of that?

  • Domperidone is similar to reglan but has fewer neurological side effects - you could ask about that.  GL!
