Good luck - the tips I got that really worked are: to not go back to the crib unless you really feel like your child is not ready and you are not going to try again for a few months. If you go back to the crib because your child won't stay in bed, they will just keep doing that until you put them back in the crib. Keep telling them to stay in bed and to call for you if they need you.
My now 3 year old DD has been in a bed since she was 18 months and only recently realized that she can get out of bed when I'm not in the room. Her transisiton went awesome.
DD #2, who is 17 months, moved into her big girl bed on Sunday and its been a little harder. She knows she can get out of bed and does. We found that for now, if we stay in her room (at first on the end of the bed but last night which was night #3, I was by the door on the other side of the room) she stays in bed. I remind her before bed that she needs to stay in bed. I was only in her room 5 mins last night and I left before she was asleep but she was calm and I knew she would fall asleep. Funny thing is that in the mornings, I find her standing near her closed door - in the dark - waiting for me. She doesn't call for me or anything so I have no clue how long she has been awake.
Good luck and be strong. Oh, another people told me is that once you give it a few days for your child to get used to it, you just need to let them be. shut the door or put a gate up and if they get out of bed, leave them. They will fall asleep at some piont and they may or may not be in bed but this will help them learn. If you keep going back in and putting them to bed, the whole transition process takes longer.
