Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Am I nuts for thinking I can potty train my 13 month old?

Seriously tonight she said what I thought was "poopy" I sniffed her (don't deny it you do it too!) and told her "um no you didn't go poopy"... then I realized it she said 'potty'. I asked her "do you need to go potty" and she ran to the stairs.

I brought her up to her bathroom with the potty seat... sure enough she PEED!  Which was a first in this house! (She was mostly excited about using toilet paper-bc I dont let her and told her she could use it when she peed!)

So yeah... is it possible... and anyone who did Potty training early any tips/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Ds acted interested at that age so we bought a potty and started putting him on it a few times a day and whenever he'd make his poop face. Sometimes he'd go, sometimes he wouldn't. After about three weeks he lost interest. He loves his new Dora potty ring someone gave him and loves to sit on it and read but doesn't typically go anymore. I figure we'll follow his lead and his cues.

  • I think it is possible, but I don't know how easy it is.  Madeleine got interested in using the potty around 14 months.  She did great--went an entire week without a poopy diaper.  Then we had some family upheaval, had to travel on short notice, and she got all confused.  When we came back, we tried again and she did okay until she lost interest.  And I've heard that's pretty normal for early potty training--it's a novelty at first and they do great and then they lose interest.  We are going to start again in Sept and see what happens.

Anyway, I say it's worth a shot.  If she's leading the way, why not see how it goes?

  • Wow, that's really awesome. I wish dd showed interest in using the toilet. I'm over the diaper changing. ha.
  • totally possible.

DD is totally interested now- so we are giving it a shot with no pressure.

just know if it works- go for it- see how it goes, no pressure, and go from therem. GL! :)

  • I would go ahead and follow her lead, and let her use the potty as often as she wants. But honestly, don't expect her to actually fully toilet train. Most kids show some early interest, and then it either goes away, or stalls. Chances are she is not really ready, but as long as she is leading the way and you're not putting pressure on her or expecting anything from her, there's no reason you can't let her do it as she wants.
  • Thats awesome. I would give it a try. I dont think DS is anywhere close to Potty Training.
