High-Risk Pregnancy

Extremely high AFP results?

I just returned from the specialist and my 2nd level II u/s (the first because of CP cysts). He tells me that my AFP levels are extremely abnormal...13 TIMES the normal rate. In most cases he worries if the levels are 2 times the normal rate, and yes, that is 13, not a mistyped 3. So I ask what that means and of course get multiple scenarios...none that appeal to me.

On the plus side, he says, your baby shows no signs of birth defects. On the other hand, your high levels of AFP concern us.  Since the u/s is showing no signs of birth defects such as spina bifida, he is worried that a) a hemorrhage occurred and we didn't know so the AFP from the baby poured into the amniotic sac, releasing itself into my bloodstream; b) a tear occurred and we didn't know so the AFP from the baby flowed into the amniotic sac, releasing itself into my bloodstream; c) my placenta is unhealthy or failing and is not doing it's job correctly, which could lead to IUGR, miscarriage, or pre eclampsia. He drew blood today to see if I have fetal blood mixed in with my blood.

I now have an appt with my regular doc on September 3...and another appt with the specialist on September 16. I will be monitored closely and may even have to start weekly visits, be put on bed rest, or be hospitalized for the rest of the pregnancy.  I sincerely hope not. All I can think is that the specialist said that normally when AFP levels are abnormal, even twice as high as normal, they do an u/s and the baby is dead. I guess my Maddie is a fighter since I know she's moving...she kicks all the time and now every movement is even more precious.

I'm wondering if anyone on this board had abnormal AFP results, and if so, how abnormal were they? Did you have any other signs or symptoms and what did all of this mean for you? I guess I am just trying to figure out possible best and worst case scenarios... Thanks!
