TTC after 35

IVF question

When you start in on doing IVF is it always preeceded by a month on BCP or doing Lupron shots?  DH and I wanted to take a vacation in Sept. and if this IUI doesn't work we're going to be moving on to IVF.  Just wondering as we're considering when in Sept. to take a vacation esp. since we don't want to take any time off from TTC too.

Re: IVF question

  • It really deoends on the protocol your clinic uses.  I was on BCP for about 4 weeks..my clinic likes to get all the IVF'ers in at about the same time.  After I took my last BCP it was about 2 weeks until ER.

  • it depends on the protocol

most REs start with the long lupron protocol - about 21 days of BCP, about 12 days of Lupron, then the stims

you could take a vacation during the BCP / Lupron phase no problem

  • My first IVF cycle I was not on BCP. ?My second cycle, I was on BCP. The dr said my being on BCP would calm my ovaries and get them ready for the stimming drugs.

  • My antagonist protocol did not have bcp.  From start to finish it was only as long as an IUI (April 21- beta May 15).  I hope this IUI does the trick, and you don't need IVF at all!

  • Yep, protocal dependent.  For my last antagonist protocal I was on BCP's for my clinic's timing convenience.  I may or may not be again depending on when I get AF - going on vacation next week, so it may affect our timing.  Hopefully you won't need to find out your protocal because this cycle is your BFP!
  • I will be on BCP for 20 days plus 10 days of lupron starting on day 15 of BCP and then at the end I will stim for 10-12.  My IVF nurse stated that if I had any out of town plans, etc, she needed to know when making my schedule.  If you let the IVF nurse know in advance, she should be able to schedule around it.

  • If we go to IVF I won't be taking BCP because of the clotting disorder, I'll be taking oral estrogen. I hope all of the timing works out for you and you don't need to go to IVF.

  • I am on the Flare Follistim protocol which started day 1 with Lupron and day 2 with Follistim.  No BCPs or other meds the month preceding.

Of course, today the nurse told me that the doctor would have put me on the long protocol with BCPs, but I came in on day 1 and was eager to go then, so he put me on the next best protocol I could start on day 1, without 'losing' a whole month.

As others have already stated, it depends on your protocol. For me, I did 2 weeks of estrace before stims. It is very difficult trying to schedule vacations around IVF cycles as we've been trying to do this for the past 5 months.?

  • Before I started my IVF cycle I told my RE that I had a trip planned that was for 5 days. He said it wouldn't be a problem. I did not take BCP, only Lupron. I was on the Lupron while on my trip and got my period much earlier than anticipated. The RE's office freaked a little bit, but I went back to them as soon as I got home and luckily all my bloodwork came back fine so they proceeded with the cycle.

I'm thinking if you're on BCP for a few weeks then you probably could take a trip, but if only lupron then maybe/maybe not depending on how long it is. Good luck.
