Last week was crazy. On Monday we went in for our last prenatal
class and while I was there (during the break of the class) we called
our doctor because I wasnt really feeling that much movement that day
so the on call doctor told us to go to Labor and delivery right then and they
hooked me up to a machine that showed the baby heartbeat as well as my
contractions. I didnt even know I was having any but then I could tell
if I just lay really still and baby's hreatrate was great. So we were there for about an hour and
everything looked good but they did notice my high blood pressure and
called me later that night telling me that the doctor wanted me to do a
24 urine collection and to swing by the lab the next morning to pick up
the jugs to do the collection. We tried to go to bed early
but I ended up staying up because I wasnt sleepy and I woke up alot in
the middle of the night to go pee and such. Well I was laying in bed at
630a and I heard a little pop and I did start to feel a
menstrual -like cramp coming on so it didn't hurt, it was just a little
uncomfortable and then I noticed a little bit of liquid feeling down
there so I got up to go potty and it was clear. SoI I would get up and a
little more would trickle down - it wasnt like gushing just coming out
a it at a time. Well I got DH up and told him to call the doctor but
that I didnt think it was pee but my water breaking so the doctor
called and told us to head into the hospital to L&D. Well while I
was sitting there I lost my mucus plug, and I started having
contractions every 5 min and they would last about a minute. So
everything started happening all at once. So we go to the hospital and
they put us in a triage room. So they hook up the monitors and that
they used the night before and she checked my cervix and I was only a
fingertip dilated. It was the first time this pregnancy that they
checked my cervix and ouch that hurt! And then they put some of the
liquid on this paper (that I was leaking) and the paper was suppose to
change to a blue form being white if it was my actual water that broke.
Well the paper didnt change color. So she got another roll out and it
still didt change. So she was saying it looks like it might not have
been my water that broke. So she went to get the doctor. I was like
well what else could it be? And even then the contractions were 4 min
apart and last for 1min and 1/2 so I wasnt going home if all that was
still coming out from me. She came back and they took enough liquid
to put on a slide to go under a microscope. They said if it was
amniotic fluid it has a very distinct pattern and sure enough it was . The doctor came in and aid it looks like we are having a baby
today. So they took me to a room and got me all set up . They were
having trouble with my putting in an IV and drawing blood. They stabbed
me like 5 or 6 times. And since I was suppose to have my appointment of
Friday where they would check my cervix and give me the GBS test then
so they had to proceed as if I had failed the test so they just had to
make sure they were giving me the stuff ( I forgot what it was called)
so that I would not give it to the baby.
I handled the
contractions pretty well till 11am and them I had the epidural put in. DH said I was much nicer after it went in. I just said he stopped
asking stupid questions. They came in pretty quick and
gave it to me. The first thing he gave me hurt and unfortunately it made me move a bit. But it worked and I was doing
good. I could see the contractions but I couldnt feel them as much. So
I thought the baby was transverse so they did an ultrasound and they
couldnt find his head (it was an old machine ) so they got the
ultrasound tech in and sure enough he was head down and ready to go, so
I was wrong. Well then later like at 3pm they noticed the baby s heartbeat was dropping a bit and they tried different things to get it
back up and they checked my cervix again. I went from a fingertip to 3
3/4cm and 100% effaced At noon, then about an hour later I went to 7cm
and at a -1 station so they said I was progressing well and they wanted
to wait and see since I was moving fast but the baby wasnt really
handling the contractions well so at 4pm
the doctor came in and
told me that we should start considering a c-section because the baby
wasnt doing too good then plus I still needed to progress 3 more cm and
then they didnt know how long I would labor for and that would
defiantly put stress on him so we decided to do the c-section. Which
was a good thing because the doctors said that I was pretty narrow and it looked liked we would have had to do one anyways. They were trying to see why the baby was so stressed and even though he did have the cord wraped once around his neck it was very loose. We had the baby at 4:58 pm on Tuesday and he is perfect! He scored a 9
on his apgar . I was shaking a bunch during the whole labor but I
chalked it up to the meds. Well right after the c-section they took out
the epidural. So they wheeled me back to my room and were just going to
check on me for awhile and the nurse would come in and press on my
tummy and said I was bleeding a lot still and so she needed to keep me
there for awhile well i guess i wasnt doing too good and I was passing
big clots and such and everytime she would have to press on my tummy it
would hurt so bad because I could feel everything. Well they brought
the doctor back and it was about 7or 8pm and they sent in the
anesthesiologist who thought he would just put in some more epidural
but he didnt know that it was removed, So i dont know if they gave me
anything in my IV but it didnt feel like it and then the doctor and
some nurses came in and they had to push on my tummy REALLY hard while
at the same time the doctor had his had in my uterus pressing around.
And thats when I lost it a bit and started crying. It was so painful.
Then after awhile I felt this huge blob come out of me and it was a
mess of blood and clotting. They said if this didnt fix it then they
would have to have me get a D&C right away. They were worried
because my uterus wasnt getting smaller as fast and they tought that
all that stuff that was in me with the clots were pieces of my placenta
that got stuck. So they kept an eye on me for another hour and then
they said everything looked good and let me go to the 2nd floor where
you go after delivery. It stunk because I wasnt able to see the baby
till then and it was like 10 or 11, I dont remember. So I sent DH to
go down and check in on him to make sure he was ok.
But they had pushed
so many fluids through me and so I was really swollen in my feet,
ankles, and up to my knees which didnt really happen to me during the
whole pregnancy. aAfter that was all done they did have me on meds
and i felt pretty good and I got to see the baby so I was happy. He has
been great! So his name is Andrew Ryan My feet and legs are still swollen like crazy and I hope
it leaves pretty soon. We were released from the hospital on Saturday
at 5pm and we had to go to the ER last night. I had the worst headache
that was behind my eyes and then on my temples and then in front where
my forehead is. plus I was shaking and I had a huge studder and my
lower back was swollen and I was even more swollen in my legs and feet.
It was awful. They thought I might have needed a blood patch but my syptoms were inconsistant with me having spinal fluid leak out. They ended up sending me home after I had some fluids and
I stopped the shaking and studdering. I just had to up my dosage of the
pain meds they gave me, but I still have the headache. Its frustrating.
But
the baby is doing great. He was a little jaundice but now after the
light therapy he is all better. Since he was born at 36w and 5 days they call it a near term birth and we just have a few extra appointments to go to. DH and my sister have been so great with everything. They are really doing a ton of work and we take shifts so it is nice that we can all sleep.
If I had any advise to pass along its just that you should try to get as much done as you can before 36weeks. I didnt even have a bag packed for the hospital but to be honest you really dont need that much. The only thing I would say to make sure and grab is some chap stick. But used the gowns the whole time even though I brought somw clothes with me. It was easier to move around in and to be checked out when the nurses and doctors came into the room. They provided everything needed for baby as well as for me there. We just brought DVDs and things like that to watch so I guess those are good to take with you as well.
GL to you and I hope that everything goes well with the rest of your pregnancy!
Re: Our birth story at 36w 5d
Congratulations! I'm glad you're both doing well now, though that sounds a little traumatic!
When do we get to see pics of the lil' guy?
Hi. I'm a lurker from TTCAL board. I do already have a DD that is 2...and her birth story was very similiar to yours, although I delivered at 39 weeks. She did fine, but I had a very traumatic experience. I too bled a lot and the clots were pretty bad after the c-section. It took a couple week before I passed all the fluid. I would have night sweats....like soak my clothes and the bed sheets bad....but I did get all of the fluids out of my system.
Glad to know the baby is doing well. Congratulations! Enjoy every second, they grow soooo fast!!
HOLY COW! You went THROUGH it! I'm sorry about all the trauma surrounding it - but am SO glad you & baby are doing well!!!!!
Congrats!
