I am able to work a new camera into our budget in the couple of months. I want a SLR but have no idea where to start.
SIL & BIL have nikons slr's but their photos aren't saying much for the camera. (as in the photographer issues not the camera)
So which one do yo have. Whats so great about it? Right now I am eyeing up one of the Canon Rebels.
Re: Rave you Digital SLR camera here
I put this list together a while back, it has a list of other things you need to consider too, and some links to things I bought/recommend:
(warning - the initial investment is the cheap part - now all I think about it MORE LENSES !!!! so check into what those will run, they don't come cheap!)
My list:
Canon Rebel Xs (there are a couple different ones... Xsi, etc. )

$535 with kit lense 18-55mm
Review: I LOVE THIS CAMERA!
Camera, Lens & Laptop backpack:

$80 +S&H
Review: LOVE IT so far... love the inside is yellow, easy to find stuff, will hold what I need, room for laptop, seems secure and sturdy.
UV Filters
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004ZCJG/ref=ox_ya_oh_product
$5-10 (buy the size specific to your lense)
Review: LOVE to just pop these on and not worry about scratching lenses. Cheap to replace. Don't have to put the cover on each time then.
Batteries (Rebel)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013ISYK6/ref=ox_ya_oh_product
$8 (yes! 8 bah!)
Review: I cannot tell the difference between these and the $80 battery it came with
Canon Lense 50/1.8
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00007E7JU/ref=ox_ya_oh_product
$114
Review: GREAT lense for the money, adds that nice fuzzy background to piks ("bokeh")
i have a Nikon D90 with an extended zoom lense & we bought the 600 series flash. i luuurve it!
it's a little heavy (compared to the Canons) but i'm a Nikon girl
look at the birds | bless this food
I had the canon rebel and loved it, but not I have the canon 50d and love it more
If you buy a camera, don't get the kit lens (imo) they are crap, spend a few hundred extra bucks and get a nicer lens. If you have questions about them let me know

also my sister, mom and SIL all shoot with Nikons and they're nice, but canons are generall a little cheaper.
I agree, don't get the lense that comes with it. Get the "nifty fifty" (50/1.8) and/or something like this I just picked up...
28-75/2.8 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/284402-REG/Tamron_AF09NII_700_28_75mm_f_2_8_XR_Di.html
I have a similar lens to the one above, but I personally prefer a much wider lens. 28mm is not that wide, mine is f/2.8 but is 17-50mm. I love it.
