Any advice on moving across the country?

And how much does it cost?  We may be moving from PA to CA or NV (or any of a number of other states but I'm trying to see how bad it would be for the longest of the possibilities).  We'd probably sell one car and pay to move one across and buy a second cheap car there.  I'm assuming I'd be selling most of our furniture as well.  We are currently in a 3BR home and would probably be renting a 2 or 3 BR apartment.

Other than sell, trash, and donate, any other advice?  What is a ballpark estimate for moving this far?  My google search turned up anywhere from $1500 to $14k!

Re: Any advice on moving across the country?

  • Not really to sure if this information will help,  DH and I moved from MA to SC we rented the truck early almost 2 months, and it was cheaper I was looking closer and the closer you rent the more it can be. We decided to move ourselves and make it take a couple of days no stress no pressure.  I also price shopped all the companies and I used my AAA card and got another discount.  We drove my car down along with the rental truck.  We took almost everything with us and that way we did not have to buy anything once down there.  We did move back and did the same thing
  • Almost exactly a year ago we moved from CA to IL.  We had a moving company that also packed for us.  MH and DS drove one car and we had the movers take the other one.  DD and I flew (she was a lap child) and stayed in a hotel for a few days until our closing.  All of that was about $12,000.

We moved all of our furniture except for DS's bedroom set because we moved to a bigger house.  We bought new bedroom stuff for DS, two new entertainment centers, a new TV, curtains, and lots of odds and ends.  Plus, it took a week after we got here for our stuff to get here so we had take out for awhile.

All in all our move was probably about $30,000.

If you have questions about moving or about researching locations, feel free to page me.  I did hours and hours and hours of research before our move.

  • We moved cross country twice in the last 4 years:

    - From Oregon to Georgia- we lucked out and my employers paid for the move but I know that one of those Pods containers with unloading was $2000 which fit almost everything we owned. A few delicate things like my china etc went on my employers giant truck and was professionally packed by them but it would have fit in the Pod. They also moved one of our cars along with theirs and we drove the other.?

    - From Georgia to Wisconsin- DH drove a uhaul truck with a trailer with his pickup truck on it. I can't remember the exact amount now but the uhual.com estimate was correct if you want to put your info in... we had one of the larger trucks. I believe it was around $1500. I drove the other car. We got a storage unit on arrival where we put everything until we could move it into the house and paid movers to get off the truck into the storage and later into the house. This will depend on where you're going and the rates there but it's roughly a couple hundred dollars each time they do something like that.
