umbilical cord question

in Success after IF
i was just changing jake's diaper and when i unbuttoned his onesie i saw that his cord stump fell off~ YAY! there's still some "stuff" inside his belly button though- not exactly sure what it is...it just looks like old dye.  do i try to clean it or just let it be?  if i clean it, should i just use a water or something else? does this sound normal?

    Bright had c rap coming out of his belly button for weeks after it fell off! and it bled a lot! we ruined so many onsies....
    Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever!     Ditto this. Nicholas had stuff coming out of his belly button for about a week after the stump fell off. I did ask the pediatrician and he said it was normal. If you want, it'd probably be ok to wipe it with a wash cloth with only water.

    I dab at Andrea's belly button with a q-tip wet with water.  Just to clean off any crusties of blood (very minimal but still some coming from diaper irritation I assume) or any other leakage.  Seems to be a-ok and the pedi saw it on Tuesday and said it was fine.  Umbilical cord/belly button care is so freaky to me for some reason...

    I just let the crap be and eventually it went away.  Poking around in there too much made me nervous for some reason.
