Success after IF

Synthroid Ladies...(long question)

What do you think about this:  I had "borderline hypo" TSH levels immediately after becoming pregnant- from memory I think my TSH was in the 4+ range...so my RE at the time told me to see an endocrinologist to review low dose synthroid.  So the endocrinologist put me on 50 mcg synthroid and my first blood test shower levels of 1.6 and the last test at 14 weeks showed 0.72.  Doesn't 0.72 seem borderline hyper now??  I questioned both my endo and my OB and they said it's still normal so stay on the 50 mcg- but if it feel so rapidly and it's now at the other end of the range then why wouldn't they switch me to 25 mcg?  Do you think that this is risky?

Final question...does anyone else shed more head hair while on synthroid?  I am shedding A LOT.

Re: Synthroid Ladies...(long question)

  • I had hypothyroidism before becoming pregnant so have been on synthroid for about 5 years. When I became pregnant the dose I was on stopped working for me as well and I needed to increase the dose. I also had just a slight elevation of 3.75, which is not out of control, but OBs are more comfortable with it in the low 2 range when pregnant. My synthroid has since needed another increase since the first one.

When is your next blood draw? I think as long as they are making sure it does not get any lower it is okay at this point,. I fount this on About.com about pregnancy  TSH levels. I hope it helps:

According to research, during a normal pregnancy, the following are the TSH normal ranges for an iodine-sufficient population without autoimmune antibodies... First Trimester: 0.24 - 2.99
    Second Trimester: .46-2.95
    Third Trimester: .43 - 2.78

Also, my head has shed for YEARS. I am sure it has a lot to do with my thyroid, but from my understanding pregnancy also has that effect as well.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • I suspect they are keeping you on it because thyroid hormones are hugely important at this stage in pregnancy.  it is likely your numbers will creep up as you progress...

The hair thing is probably not so much synthroid as it is hormones in general. But your prenatals will help with that soon!

  • I'm not pg but I am on Synthroid as well (50mg) and have been shedding a ton!  I know hair loss can be related to thyroid issues as well as being a pg issue.

  • while it is on the lower side, it's still normal. Just wait and see what you next draw is and if it's still low..ask your dr. about skipping your pill once a week or going down to .25,
  • Hi, I'm on 25 mg. My level was around 4-5 before meds. I have been on meds since November. Right now it's 1.8 and my doc wants to keep it below 2. I see her once a trimester.  I'm not really sure about your level, it does seem a little low, but I am no means an expert.

As for the hair, my loss has actually been less since I have been on the synthroid.
