Had my first OB/peri appt!

It went really well.  I'm going to have to go to that clinic and hospital for the entire pregnancy (it's 45 minutes away but has a level III NICU just in case).  I met one of the three potential doctors that might deliver me, and got more information in an hour than I've had in two months.  I feel SO much better knowing that I have a number to call with concerns or problems, instead of just being directed to the ER.

The doc told me the latest they will let me go is 36 weeks.. if no labor by then, they will either induce me or schedule a c-section (depending on the presentation of the babies or any other indicators.)  I asked how long their twin patients typically stay working.. she said she recommends staying home from 28 weeks on, but as early as 24 weeks is not uncommon.  This seemed really early to me, but at least I know she will support me if I'm very uncomfortable or stressed.

They confirmed the mono-di idential twins, who are growing nicely and evenly at this point.  I was told it's okay for me to fly down to see my family around 20 weeks, as long as my cervix isn't shortening.

All in all, a good appointment.  We saw the babies again, but no heartbeats have been heard yet.  They were both beating at 162.  Baby A is very uncooperative.  LOL

Have an awesome afternoon ladies!  And thanks for answering my questions so far.  I'm sure I'll have more.

Re: Had my first OB/peri appt!

  • Glad to hear that things are going well. ?Mine are mono-di twins as well, and similar to you I was told they won't let me go past 37 weeks and they want me off work at 24-25 weeks, but I am going to try and work through my 26th week if all goes well. ?So glad you had a great appt and got so much great information!!!
  • Glad it went well!! I felt the same way after our 1st peri appt... like we finally got a the good information we were looking for.

Ours are also mono/di.  Was that part of the reason your peri won't let you go past 36 weeks?  Just wondering because ours didn't seem too set on a specific timeline for delivery.

  • That's great that things are going so well! I'm surprised they won't let you go past 36 weeks, that's pretty early, even with IDs. But it sounds like they know what they're doing.

    Yay for a good appointment!

  • Glad you had a good appointment :)  What part of Canada are you from?  I don't need specifics, I'm in the Maritimes and was told 38 weeks and I'm having identicals as well, just curious as for the reasoning :)  It know different practices operate differently- you defenitely got more answers than I've had.

I've been getting a good level of care as far as weekly biophysical, bi-weekly ultrasound and prior to 34 weeks was getting my cervix checked, but the practice I go to it's alot of diffrent OB's so it's whoever is on call that will deliver so it's nice you "know" everything that will be going on and this early on- awesome!

  • Firstly, I'm in Ontario, Canada.. about an hour and a half north of Niagara Falls.

As for the 36 week cutoff time, she explained that they believe the placenta has pretty much done what it's going to do, and at that point, there are more risks to leaving them in longer than there are for them to be born and get nutrients from outside.  I was a little surprised it wasn't 37 or 38 weeks, but they DID really sound like they knew what they were talking about.  She made sure to tell me that the great majority of their 36 week twins had no NICU time at all.

She also was very on board with a course of steroids for lung development if they suspect any chance of earlier delivery.  That made me feel much relief, as my brother (who was a fraternal twin to my sister) died due to his lungs not having enough time to develop before a premature delivery.  Granted, this was 30 years ago, but still.

My husband and I had our Honeymoon in Niagara Falls- BEAUTIFUL!  I think we plan on going back for our 5 year anniversary which will be next year :)

Well it seems your OB/Peri will be taking good care of you- are you planning on finding the gender of your twins or want a suprise?

  • We're finding out the genders for SURE.. no preferences, honestly.. just no patience either.  :)
