Is this normal? Doppler question

Yesterday I had my normal 4 week check up. The doctor checked for the baby's heartbeat and had a hard time finding it. When she did find it it was pretty faint (meaning you couldn't hear it too well from the Doppler device) the heartbeat itself was 150bpm. Last time you could hear it loud and clear and strong. The doctor didn't seem to concerned.

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm wondering if maybe the baby was in a weird position...

Re: Is this normal? Doppler question

  • Same thing just happened to me at 14w checkup. Doc didn't say what bpm it was but it was a quick check.

  • nothing to be concerned about. i have a doppler at home and it does that based on where the baby is. if it's right up at the surface it's so loud and strong. if it's way at the back swimming around, it's softer and farther away, harder to catch on the doppler.
  • I think so...  Your baby is getting bigger so there is different places and positions he/she could be in.  My doctor has started asking me where my little guy likes to hang out when I go now...

As long as the HB was good I'd say nothing to worry about.

  • That happens to us sometimes on the home doppler when the probe isn't directly over baby.  The main thing is getting a count - the loudness is secondary.  If something sounded off, the doctor would hear it.
