Re: post from EFF board, anyone quilt?

I have never done this before, but I can use my sewing machine and have purchased some quilting materials.  I am looking for grandma square dimensions for a crib sized quilt, or any patterns that are crib sized with just the simple checkered square look.  Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Re: post from EFF board, anyone quilt?

  • A lot of the quilts my family has made used approx 4"x4" squares...some 6x6...It really depends on the preference of what you are working with.  I like 12x12 because its easier to work with slightly larger pcs (less sewing--I'm impatient which is odd because I like knitting)

As far as patterns go I don't think my family uses any so no help there, sorry...GL and have fun!!

I am thinking that I do not need a pattern....but I am concerned about sewing the binding on, and sewing straight! ha.  What kind of look are you going for?

I wanted to do something similar to:

I love the minky white in the second bedding and would probably incoorporate it in the first one.  All of this is depending on the sex of this new LO - he/she will be sharing a room with DD and I thought a surf theme would be good for girl/girl or girl/boy.

  • If you have never made a quilt...maybe consider getting a kit from somewhere like Joanne fabrics.  It has everything you need and instructions.   Do it once for practice (save it as a gift or use it) and then you will have a much better idea of what to do on the real one!  :)   Plus, you can use the same instructions/pattern and just buy new fabric.

Yes!  I am doing the same thing!  The second URL is very similar to the different textures/patterns that I am using too!

I was thinking about doing a practice quilt as well, great point!

  • To help you sew straight...  take a roll of masking tape, and cut down into the roll about 1/8 inch or so...  move over 4-6 inches, and cut down about 1/8 inch again.  Peel the entire tape chunk out of your roll.  You now have a 4-6 inch strip of tape about 1/8 inch thick.  Tape this directly to your sewing machine's "deck" and you can butt your material right up to it while you sew.  It forces a straight line that way.  This sounds so confusing, but I'm not home, so I can't take a picture for you...  hope it makes sense.
