how many months old before they play with toys?

I have a basket I keep filling of rattles, hand toys they can grasp and feel and such.  I was just wondering how old a baby is before they really truly need toys.  I keep thinking all I need now is the bouncy seats, swings, mat for tummy time and these rattle type toys.  Everything else I'm receiving or buying I'm just putting in the storage room.  Am I correct on this?

Re: how many months old before they play with toys?

  • I would say that Jacob was about 3.5 months when he started reaching for toys and playing with them (read: put them in his mouth).  But, even before this...he did like to see toys in front of him.  I would shake a rattle or dance a bear in front of him even if he couldn't reach for it and play with it.

  • At 2 months baby should start to grasp/hold a rattle that you place in their hands.  We are just getting to this point and it's fun!  She will also grasp those link rings.  I think I made several "chains" of about 3 links that she can hold and shake around a little bit.

thanks ladies, that's what I thought.  Our shower is Saturday and the gifts we already are receiving we are trying to organize so when the new ones come Saturday, we have a plan.  I told my husband 1/2 of the stuff is going straight to the storage room, let's not even bring it into their room to go over and divide.  So much is for when they are 5+ months.
