FF/Charting girls.... I have a ?

OK, so after 2 cycles of charting temps/cm/bd, I am just now reading FF lessons. Is there a specific reason why you can't temp with an ear thermometer? Of course, I've been using one for the past two cycles..... Uggh.

  • I think it's not supposed to be sensitive enough. But if it's been working for you and you can see your temp shift, I would guess you could continue using it.

  • I don't temp but I know the answer
    They are not as accurate

  • You must use a basal thermometer...they are made specifically for charting. You can get one for under $10 at Target. It is much more accurate and sensitve for the purpose of temping. It can be used orally or vaginally, but you have to pick one method and stick with it.

People temp vaginally? I never knew that. I have a lot to learn

  • OK, thanks... I just figured if I was consistently using a specific thermometer, it would show the thermal shifts. But maybe that's why my temps are all over the place.
  • I don't know why, but it must not record your BBT correctly.  You need to use a BBT thermometer because they can record slight variations--like 98.17 vs. 98.2 so you can chart very specifically to the hundredth.  You are only supposed to chart orally or vaginally, but I think most people go orally.

I honestly didn't know they made ear thermometers for adults. Aren't those for babies? I'm ignorant about ear thermometers.

When I was in the hospital for my last D&C, they used a forehead thermometer. I thought it was so cool!

  • Interesting... Well at least I know now.  If I do not get a BFP this cycle, I will definitely get the basil thermometer and start charting formally.

I purchased it for my DD but it doesn't specify that its for children. Now that I think about it, my own doc uses it too.

  • Apparently the ear thermometers aren't sensitive or accurate enough. Make sure you get a digital thermometer that reads to the hundredth place, not the tenth.
