Those with small homes

Do you sometimes panic at the thought of where to put everything?  I am usually okay until I remember that our computer will now be housed in the living room.  I am worried it's going to look tacky, but oh well.

What are your concerns with having a small space?

Re: Those with small homes

  • My mom has been stacking all the baby stuff in her basement and I have no idea how I am going to get it all into our tiny appt but somehow we will manage.

  • I am worried as well. ?We are actually moving into 2 bedroom next week so things will definitely be better, but I am concerned about the living room space. ?I can only imagine how much stuff we will accumulate and where it will need to go. ?I want to put the pack n play with the changing table in the living room, as the nursery will be on the 2nd floor. ?I know we will also have an exersaucer, etc. so I know we will be crammed in there, but it will all be worth it I am sure!

  • I'm not too worried about how one baby will work but we plan to have more children and have no plans to move so I don't know where more children and their stuff will fit.

  • We live in a 750 sq. foot condo, so the baby's room, which was once the office, will now become just the baby's room... except for the cabinet that is in half of the closet that is our functioning pantry.... computer is being moved into bedroom, office stuff into our Master Closet (thank goodness it's big enough).  It's pretty annoying, but what are you going to do?  At least we have 2 bedrooms!

  • we have ample space right now, but in the beginning of next year we're going to have our "good" furniture shipped out here.. which will fill the living/dining room and i worry about where our huge computer desk is going to be housed (its currently in the living room).

i really dont want to move it into the baby's room.. but i'm afraid that might be our only option. :-/

We own the same size 2BR condo.  Our office funrniture will all be moved to my IL's basement.  The baby's closet will also house our computer and some of my essential sewing/scrapbook suppplies.  I'm sure somethings wil be tight but, it's our home and we'll make it work for this first baby.

  • I'm not too worried, we plan on listing our house next year sometime because we do want more children. Baby doesn't really have a bedroom in this house, but our bedroom is large enough for his crib. We have a lot of storage space in the attic, so that will take care of things we aren't using.

My concern is just the sheer size of baby furniture & gear. We have this problem with regular furniture too. We barely got a sofa & loveseat into our living room, for eg. Have you ever measured out how a baby swing, or a pack & play, would fit in your house? Some of those suckers are HUGE!! Highchairs, cribs, all this stuff is made for people with 2000sf + homes and we are not one of them.

We're going to have to do a lot of measuring, smart shopping, and not bringing home too much stuff.

  • Thankfully, once #3 arrives, we'll only be in our townhouse for one more year. My best advice: organize and declutter.  I've already started to do it now, because I get anxious thinking about having three kids in a 1300 square foot space. You're right - baby stuff is huge, but it's only temporary that it will be out. In the beginning, I fed both kiddos in their bouncy chair; when they transitioned to a high chair, I bought the fisher price space saver and it fits into one of our kitchen chairs or one the chairs to the kiddy table. Look for a mini-crib; some of them are nicer than the full-size ones. We bought a large, convertible crib thinking it would grow with DS. But, after seeing how beaten up it's gotten (and that we'll end up buying furniture down the road), I wish I would have just gotten a mini cirb. Same for the PNP; you can definitely find smaller ones. The biggest wastes of space were the swing and the jumperoo; our swing actually folds up, so we keep it stored in the closet, but if someone can tell me how to make the jumperoo fit better, I'd love to hear it

  • Our house is for sale but, as we all know, realty is not good. i have been making plans on what to do to the house just in case we don't sell to make room fro everything. It is very overwhelming. I try to take it one room at a time. Luckily we don't have a big computer just a laptop so I all I need is a small corner for the printer. But when i start to think about a swing and toys and all of that it can be scary!

  • The house we are moving into has 3 bedrooms, so we have room but we'll be moving out next july since we're only renting & not really sure if we'll be moving into an apartment or another house so we'll have to figure that out.

  • I lived in a 650 sq. ft. space when DD#1 was first born, and now I'm in our 3000 sq. ft. restored house for DD#2's impending birth in December. One thing I've learned--it doesn't matter if the space is tiny or huge--you will buy stuff to fill it up, but keeping all the stuff organized is the key. We made it work in the tiny duplex because we didn't buy much (daughter was a newborn - 1 year old) and I was obsessed with every toy being put away every night (so it never looked cluttered/messy); now DD has an entire playroom, along with a bedroom--filled to the brim and cluttered looking/messy. I was MUCH better about keeping the tiny space organized. Use cute boxes/totes to keep stuff hidden away; change from a desktop to a laptop computer if possible; buy pieces you get double-duty out of (example: use a dresser for a changing table); hang tons of shelves!
