TTC after 35

Ok-I think it's time we made a call...

to my Dr and address why we're (still) not pregnant.

I guess we'll start with my OB-GYN and go from there, apparently she can do some preliminary testing, etc?

Can you guys tell me what to expect during this first visit and what to be prepared with and for?

My temp is still up...AF hasn't shown up yet this month but I'm having symptoms and think I can feel her on her way.  It's been 14 months since I went off BCP and 8 cycles of "really" trying (vs just seeing if it would happen on its own...HA!) ... why is this step so emotional?

Thanks ladies...as always, you are the best & such a great source of information & encouragement!

  • OB will have you do bloodwork. Likley a progesterone test to make sure you are ovulating, Possibly some cycle day 2 or 3 bloodwork for FSH (tests ovarian reserve) and some other hormones. Will likely have to get an HSG (test to make sure your tubes are open). And DH will need a semen analysis. Good luck!

  • I felt much better AFTER I made the call. I felt like we were finally moving in the right direction.  If you have fertility coverage, I would probably go straight to the RE.  For insurance reasons, I started with the gyn and that has been fine too.  Good luck to you!

Exactly what happened for us! I took clomid for a month and only changed to the RE after my OB's assistant told us that DH had low motility and low sperm count. Turned out he only had slightly low motility and it's not that big of a problem.

  • Ditto what everyone else says about the expectations.

Have you considered going straight to the RE?  I know that every OB-GYN office is different, but I regret the time I wasted at my OB-GYN's office...plus most of the testing had to be re-done per my RE's orders because what the OB-GYN ordered was not sufficient.  Again, this is just based upon my experience, but I just think there is an uncomparable level of expertise at the RE that you can't expect to receive at your OB-GYN.

I agree that for some reason this is a very hard step to take.  Like maybe if you don't acknowledge a potential problem it doesn't exist.

Good luck and keep us posted on how everything goes!

  • Thank you everyone!!  I'll keep you posted!
