Specific restaurant ideas

I am going to grab takeout for dinner tonight and wondered about any meals people had that didn't give you high readings. We have the usual chains around here. I have a really hard time, especially when some of the non fast food places don't have nutritional information. Thanks in advance!

  • Go to www.calorieking.com. There you can type in restaurants and look at nutritional information. I found that Applebee's apple walnut chicken salad barely affected my numbers, but they have removed it from the menu. Most things that are grilled with veggies are OK; I have to stay away from places like Olive Garden and Old Chicago.

  • At Applesbee's, I get either:

Half-size oriental chicken salad..with fried chicken! Yum!

Chicken quesadilla.  Only eat half (it's pretty huge) and you should be good.

  • I had, of all things, KFC last night.  An original recipe thigh and drumstick, a side salad with ranch, and a biscuit.  My blood sugar was 99 an hour later.  The biscuit was awesome.  I did feel a little guilty about the sodium, though.

Some other meals that have worked for me:

Costco food court quarter dark meat rotisserie chicken, half slice combo pizza

El Pollo Loco 3 pieces chicken, 1 tortilla, salsa, cole slaw, piece of fruit

Souplantation big salad, small baked potato

Buca di Beppo caprese salad, short ribs, broccoli, a little bread

Taco Bell 3 crispy tacos supreme, milk

Claim Jumper house salad, 6 buffalo wings, carrots and celery sticks, 1/2 cheese toast

Cheesecake Factory omelet, sliced tomatoes, 1 slice wheat toast OR 2 grilled pork chops, a little applesauce, a little macaroni and cheese, sauteed spinach

California Pizza Kitchen half grilled vegetable salad with shrimp and balsamic vinaigrette

Starbucks protein plate (mini bagel with peanut butter, egg, cheese, grapes, 2 apple slices)

Rubios chipotle ranch salad with shrimp and salsa

Sizzler malibu chicken, salad bar salad, 1/2 a cheese toast, a little fruit

Chick-fil-a 8 chicken nuggets with ranch, chargrilled and fruit salad with caesar dressing

El Torito steak/shrimp/chicken fajitas, 1 flour tortilla, guacamole, salsa, sour cream, 1 small corn cake

  • It's weird how different foods can affect people differently. ?When I have the Oriental Chicken Salad from Applebees (with the fried chicken) my sugar is high. ?I guess it's the dressing, which is pretty sweet... But my favorite is the California Shrimp Salad (I get it with chicken instead.) ?I love the?avocado?dressing!

Most times when I go out I get a cheeseburger (sometimes with bacon) loaded up with lettuce, tomato & onion, and skip the fries (anything made out of a potato KILLS my sugar!!!) and get a salad or a veggie of some kind. ??

Last night I had the chicken club from Wendys (fried chicken sandwich with swiss cheese & bacon) and a salad and was fine.?

  • Thanks girls for the ideas! I find going out to eat or at a friend's house super stressful because I can't look at all of the ingredients and make informed decisions. Obviously some things are easier(no pasta, no bread) but I find the sauces on things kill me....I can never guess how much sugar is in things like that.

  • If you have Taco Cabana, their taquitos are suprisingly low in carbs - I had 4 with queso for dipping and had good numbers.

Chili's has their nutrition info online but it's really hard to find something low-carb there.

I've always done pretty well with chicken fajitas at local places too - I limit myself to 6 chips (which is the hard part), then 2 tortillas and usually everything else offered is either protein or veggie. And it's always plenty of food.

There are very few restaurants that you can't find the nutrition info for online, even if they aren't on the restaurant's site. One state (Oregon? Washington?) has a law that makes them disclose nutrition info, so somebody has usually posted it online somewhere (that's how I found the nutrition info for cheesecake factory)

I agree, sauces are hard! I haven't had chinese food in a restaurant lately because I'm afraid of trying to figure it out - and because I love things like lemon chicken and sweet and sour sauce which I'm sure are almost pure sugar sauces.
