30 Days for Circ?

I had my pp OB appt today (not sure why they do 4 weeks when most ppl i hear is 6, but oh well).  I asked about Carter's circumcision because he was so tiny in the nicu that ob wanted to wait a bit.  Today, the ob said it had to be done within 30 days, which is tomorrow.  Any idea why 30 days?  I didn't think to ask.

He just hit 5lbs today and is still SO tiny down there (sorry Carter)...I hope they can do a good job...

Re: 30 Days for Circ?

  • Ours was done the day he came home, so 77  days.  In our NICU it was standard to do it the day they go home.  He was just under 5 pounds and it went fine. Good luck!

  • We discussed doing Robbie's before he came home for the hospital, but he was still too small (4lb)

We ended up doing it when he had his last stomach surgery in March. So he was 9 months old.

Perhaps the insurance will only cover your OB's services for up to 30 days after delivery?

  • For my insurance, if it isn't done in the first 30 days of life, it has to be done after 1 year, under general anesthesia... this is actually why Max is intact... they didn't do it that first month, and I'm not going to subject him to surgery he doesn't *need*

They might do it in Oct. when he has his hernia surgery... we haven't asked the surgeon yet, and I don't know if we will.

  • It's probably that the insurance may not cover it if it's outside of the first 30 days of life, but it's not the age it's the weight that is an issue. The risks are greater for a baby to be put under general anesthesia if they are under 15lbs which most kids are by the time they are 1year old.  I strongly recommend you don't rush into anything and speak with a pediatric urologist.
  • DS was done @ 5 weeks old, 4lb 8oz and did fine.?

    Me too!

My kids were circumcised by their pediatrician after they were discharged from the NICU. So one was circed at 5 weeks, the other at 8.5 weeks. I think the reason they have a policy of doing it within 30 weeks of birth is because the boys start developing more nerves in their penises when they are born, and the normal pain control (lidocaine injection and sugar water) just don't work. My son who was circ'ed at 8.5 weeks was in horrible pain during his circumcision - and the doctor messed it up, in a big way because he was still tiny (under 5 lb). He was recircumcised under general anesthetic when he was 9 months old.

Please, please talk to a pediatric urologist about this. You really want your son to be in the best possible hands.

  • Nicholas had his while under anesthetic for his hernia surgery.  i think it was day 75 or 76, the week before he came home from the NICU.  I have never heard of a time limit before, i would defintely ask for their reasoning.
  • Xander's was done a couple days before he left the NICU, he was in the NICU for 35 days.
