I know that you're not allowed to eat at the hospital when you're in labor, but WHY?

Because of the anesthesia they give you if you have to have a c section is what i've heard. it's the same reason why they make you fast on the day of a surgery.

Some places let you eat, others don't I've heard. Just depends.

actually it would be only in the emergency situation where they would have to put you completely under.  Since it's pretty rare to get to that point a lot of docs will let you eat very little and have sips of water instead of only ice chips.  Depends on the doctor

Ah, I figured it was something like that. Well, here's hoping for a short labor, because I'm cranky enough when I haven't eaten. I can't imagine the combination of a hard labor and no food!

My MIL is a nurse.  She says its because when you are in labor, your body stops digesting.  If you eat while you are in labor or have a full stomach, its very likely you will throw up.

I like this reason better than the possibility-of-emergency-c-section reason. Makes sense.
