s/o registry: I *love* Amazon

DH and I decided to stick true to Baby Bargains and buy only those rated A- and better. We made two registries, and I *love* Amazon.com. They have a much better selection, model and color wise, and allows you to list the items on your registry by "nice to have," "like to have", and "must have." And it allows you to add notes to each item. We added a mini camcorder listed for $150 and wrote "to capture all the baby's firsts." We're not trying to be greedy, that was the only non-baby item added, but it would be nice to have for baby. We have the BRU registry for those items we can actually find in the store as well as those odds and ends layettes and stuff for those who want to see things in person. The process is taking a lot longer than I would like, we're not finished and we spent 2 days on it so far, but at least we know we're asking for quality pieces that should last for a couple more children after this (and can rank the priority of necessity).  Have fun registering everyone!

For me the problem with Amazon is that not many people are going to think to get your shower gift weeks in advance.  I had a shower which 75 people came to and was registered at Amazon and BRU.  Not one person got anything off of Amazon, and I think only maybe 1 or 2 gifts were purchased more than 4 days before the actual shower.  For the most part, everyone went into the store last minute to get something.  And I'll admit, this is what I do when I go to showers too. 

FWIW, BRU sells the flip videos too, so you can register for that there.

I have an amazon baby registry, too.  It was the only place that I could find the P&P that I really liked.  They have great selection and I liked the reviews.

Most of our family and friends live out-of-town and won't be able to come to my shower, so I don't really see registering at Amazon as a disadvantage in that respect. I'm sure people who come to the shower will be more likely to buy something off the BRU registry, but I don't think that's true for our out-of-town family and friends.

Since I would like to cloth diaper and would like to have wooden baby toys rather than plastic ones, Amazon also had a much better selection than BRU, and I loved that you could add items from other web sites.

Good point on the last minute shoppers. I tend to buy as soon as I know about something so that I don't get slim pickings. I'm thinking that only the bigger pieces, like the car seat and stroller, are on the Amazon lsit that mostly family will really be purchasing from there. I'm making sure they'll be enough at BRU to cover the bases. Most of the good stuff on BRU are online only, so there isn't much of a difference then between the two sites. I did overlap a little if I found them on both sites to cover the bases. I didn't look for the Flip at BRU but I'll probably will now.

This is definitely true.  However, I also live at least 1000 miles from all my family, and my mom has 22 brothers and sisters, so we have tons of out of town people who sent us gifts, and still no one got anything off Amazon.  A lot of the older generation did it the old fashioned way, went to the store, picked something out, and mailed it, and most others sent BRU gift cards and money.  Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge techie and buy everything online, but most of the people who got us gifts aren't, and don't.

I love Amazon too, and if it works for you and your guests use it, that's awesome!  If they don't like it they can always just give you cash.  My biggest fear was that if I registered somewhere that people didn't want to use, they would just go wherever they wanted and buy us things we didn't want/need instead of the stuff we really did.  I hope it works out for you though, Amazon really is much more complete!

I'm surprised more of the out-of-town people didn't buy from Amazon. We did register at BRU as well, but most of the stuff I registered for there is only available online. So far, we've had one purchase off our BRU registry and one from Amazon, so I guess we'll see what happens.

I agree with you on the fears of getting stuff you don't want or need. My MIL is constantly buying us stuff that falls into that category.
