steroid shots for LO's lungs

I got an FFN test today and if it comes back positive the dr wants to give me a steroid shot for the baby's lungs. ?I am 1cm dilated and my cervix is soft, when they hooked me up the fetal monitoring machine I was having contractions about 15 mins apart, but I couldn't even feel them.Does anyone know about these steroid shots? ?I know that they help the lungs, but are there any known side effects??

Re: steroid shots for LO's lungs

  • I had two doses of the steriods 24 hours apart.  I didn't have any side effects from them (other than the pain of getting them, it's a shot in your butt/hip area).

  • I had them as well with my DS and same as electricdoctor, no side effects. I think they helped my son significantly. He still need O2 (which is to be expected for a 27 weeker) but I know he did better because of the shots. My sister had them as well and did fine. My neice (34 weeks) never needed any O2.
  • ive been on IV steriods, injections and now oral doses for a few weeks now b/c of my asthma....was worried abt baby and effects on him but MD's assured me, the steriods can only help the baby now with lung development and will not cause any other side effects......

    hope that helps!

  • I had them at 31 weeks because I had a shortened cervix and was 1cm dilated.  I didn't have any side effects and DD managed to hang on until 34w6d so hopefully your  LO will do the same!

Good luck!  I hope the FFN is negative.

  • i had the steroid shots as well. the only thing i have to add is to have the nurse put ice on the area for about a minute beforehand - i seriously didn't feel a thing!! hope the FFN is negative!
  • I had them with DS and he was breathing on his own from day one, so they did help...No side effects just a little pain at the time of getting them, but so worth it.
  • Thank you ladies! ?

  • i also had them at 27 weeks3 days and dd was born 27 weeks 5 days. i recieved them both in my tusshy and a day apart. They didnt really hurt but I truly believe that they helped DD's lungs. she was intubated regardless bc she was so tiny but for the fist 5 hrs she was breathing on her own.

  • These shots are standard and safe. I had them at 31 weeks and delivered at 32 weeks. My daughter was on room air from birth and did not need O2 or a vent. I credit this to the steroid shots.
  • I had them too on Monday and Tuesday for LO.

The NICU doctor was so excited that I was able to get them and she was still hatching.. ha ha ?They told me that it takes about 48 hours from the LAST shot for them to be about 80% effective, a week for total.. and that she might need to be tubed, but it wouldn't be for nearly as long as the same baby without the shots.

Everything I've heard about them has been super positive. ?I didnt really have time to think about it, but I would have still done it if I had.?
